BALLOT APPEALS

MORE ESSENTIAL WORKERS CABLE OPERATORS EXEMPTED Th ore were yesterday thirty two appeals listed for consideration by the third Military Appeal Board. Mr. \Y> Hi S. Moorhouse presided, and with him were Messrs. M. J. Mack and A. 0. Considine. Captain Baldwin was present as military representative. Cable Operators. Oswald Gray Robertson and Bligh Swift Gribbeu, cable and landline operators, who w|ere drawn in tho ballot, and Oswald Morling, Frederick Stanley Coote and William Eklon Coates, cable and landline operators, .who had volunteered for service, had their appeals adjourned sine die, so long as they, remained in their present occupations.'' The appeals were made by the Eastern Extension Cable Company, for whom Mr. A. T. Markman, Chief Clerk of the G.P.0., appeared. In answer to Captain Baldwin, 1 Mr. Markman stated that he knew that some of the men were dissatisfied that thoy were not allowed to proceed to the front. Ho further stated that as soon as the cable 6teamer had completed its work here it would be possible to spare one or two men. The Cable Company was really short-handed at the present time'! Seamen and Firemen. Mr. \V. T. Young, secretary of the Seamen's Union, appeared to support the appeals of thtj following seafaring men :-i-Firenien: Francis Cannon, Frederick James Stapleton, and William Luddon; able seamen: Frederick William Green, Walter George Belsey, Wilfred Patrick Hartigaii, Lionel Joseph Numa, and Henry Matthew Thomas; and donkeyman: William I'rancis Haurahau. In each case Mr. Young gave the record and present occupation of the appellant. The appeals were adjourned sine die, with exemption from military service, subject to appellants continuing in their present occupations. The appeal of John 'Tynan was dismissed, as Mr. Younjj was unable to give any particulars of the present address and occupation of appellant. The appeal of William M'Laclllan, fireman, was adjourned to March 23 to ascertain where he was working at present.

Undue Hardship. Charles M'Carthy appealed for the exemption of his son Edward Grey M'Carthy, carter, 16 Adelaide Road, on the ground of undue hardship. Mr. J. A. Scott appeared in support of the appeal, and stated that M'Carthy, senior, had been totally blind for the past seven years, and was quite helpless. He was 73 years of age, and his wife was 63 years old. He owned a horse and dray, which was employed by,the City Council at £i 10s. 7d. per week, including the pay of the driver. Edward M'Carthy was the driver. It cost him about 80s. per week for the keep of the horse, including shoeing, and there were repairs to the dray, which would probably average 3s. or 4s. per week. He had a married son and a grandchild living with him, who paid 30s. a week. There wa» another son, Ale'rnnder M'Carthy, a cabinetmaker by trade, who was a cripple .aud earned about £3 a week when he was able to work. Ho. paid £1 per week into the home. If he had to emplov a man to drive the dray he woulcl have to pay union wages. £3 per week, with union hours. His son, for whom was appealing, got his board and lodging, and a few shillings whenever he wanted money for clothes or other purposes. ■ After hearing the evidence of Charles M'Carthy, the board adjourned the appeal for three months, with exemption from military service. A Shearer's Appeal. The appeal of John Alexander Mee, shearer and shearers, 1 agent, 9 Bute Sjtreat, Wellington, was based on the fact that he was an essential worker. Mr. C. Grayndler, secretary of the and Pastoral Workers' Union, also appealed against Mee being called for service. Mee in his evidence stated that he had not been shearing for the past 'five, years, but was engaged, in organising work. He was a competent mutton butcher as well as a shearer, and he was quite prepared to engage in any capacity as an agriculturist or \>asioral worker until next shearing season. Exemption was granted provided appellant engages forthwith in farming work or in some other essential industry, and reports regularly to the Commander of No. o Group. Various Other Appeals. Cyril Paul M'Farlane, storekeeper, . Seatoun, lor whom Air. A. ; J. Luke appeared, asked for extension of time to April 14 to cutible him to complete the disposal of his property, 'lhe application was granted. .

ifrauk Hatch, importer, 34 Courtenay Place', was granted exemption to April 14 to enable him to arrange his business affairs. The appeal of Marcus Alfred Levy, driver, 37a Hopper Street, Wellington, wps adjourned lor three months with exemption from military service, the ground of appeal being undue hardship. The appellant stated that his lather was 8l) years of age, and his health was very bad. His mother's age ho gave as 75. He was the only one at home to look after the old folk. . John Alfred Hughes, butcher's assistant, was granted exemption for three months because 110 was the sole support of a widowed mother, two young sisters, besides his wife and child. Arthur Alfred Hancock, assistant salesman, 57 Waitoa Road, Hataitai, was' granted exemption to April 20 bo arrange his affairs. Mr. T. i\eave appeared for Clarence .Victor Kaye Hugo, 3 liossinore Crescent, Wellington, whoso appeal was for domestic reasons. The appeal was adjourned for three months, with exemption from military service. Eric Louis Hooker,- carpenter, employed by Messrs. Hansford and Mills, contractors for Parliament House, appealed on the ground that he had already been before the Medical Board and had been passed (J32) subject to undergoing an operation, and was to report on May 3. The appeal was upheld. Albert Henry Hatfield, clerk, 85 Waipapa Road, appealed on the ground that he was already a soldier. He produced a certificate showing that lie had been permitted to remain out of camp until April 30.- The appeal was upheld, subject, to the certificate being verified.

The claim of Frank Johnston, 417 Adelaide Road, that he was a. returned soldier discharged as medically unlit was upheld: Johnston produoed his certificate of discharge, which showed that ho had served abroad for 215 days.

At a sitting of the Military Service Board, Dr. Ferguson, Dean of the Medical Faculty, appealed on Benalf of the following students: —Douglas Muir, fourth year; John Walls, graduate, and in camp as a medical officer; Robert Christio, fifth year; Colin Andorson, fourth year; David Bing, second year, now in camp. Tho appeal of Walk was withdrawn, and tlie others adjourned sino die. Exemption was granted two Catholic priests, but appeals on behalf of .Edward Lyons and Maurice Spillang, iourtli year Catholic students, were dismissed. Fatl\cr CofTy said these men wero necessary, as next year tho Church would bo stuck for men. Tho Church asked exemption only for students in the last four years. The chairman said the board thought clergymen and theological students should not bo put on the same footing, and if it exempted theso two it would put- them on a higher footing than medical students, which tho board could not do. The board was prepared to recommend that the appellants go as non-combatants.
