WAR PENSIONS
£265,000 ANNUAL LIABILITY
Last week the' War Pensions Board dealt with 87 new claims and 80 renewals. Of the 87 new claims 80 were from soldiers. Sis were granted pensions and 23 allowances, eight were declined, and one adjourned. Of the dependants, 33 were granted pensions and nine allowances; six were declined and one adjourned. Of the 80 renewals, 48 were continued (four to bo final), six were increased ; in soven cases the board decided to adhere to ,its former decision. In fifteen cases it was decided that the allowance cease forthwith, and four allowances were converted into pensions.
The result of the week's operations is the granting of 67 pensions, of the annual value of £3781—less than the average. The annual liabilities under the Act now stand as under:—Soldiers (984). £52,215, average £52; wives and widows (434), £42.528. average £97; other dependants (1598), £46,314, average £29; allowances (3268), £181,672. average £56. Grand total: 6254 pensions, annual value £325,639. average £51. Since tlie last return, cancelled pensions have increased hy about 1200, representing a savin" of some £60.000, leaving an annual liability at present of £265,000.
