Sir Douglas Haig's Tribute to Women, A January issue of the "Daily News" contains the following: — The following special Order of tlio Day has been issued by General Sir Douglas Haig:—"Tho Commander-in-Chief desires to bring to the notico r,f the troops the following incident which is illustrative of the spirit animating British women who are working with us for the common cause. One night recently a shell burst in a shop at a filling factory in which tho great majority of the workers aro women. "In spite of the explosion tho work Was carried on without interruption, though several women were killed and others seriously wounded. The remainder displayed perfect coolness and discipline in dealing with tho emergency. As the result of tlicir gallant and patriotic conduct tho output of munitions was not seriously affected. "The Commander-in-Chief feels sure that the Army will l appreciate and ho inspired by this splendid example of the loyalty and determination with which # their comrades in tho munition factories are helping towards victory." —Reuter Special. Women and the Honours List. In a "Daily News" of January the following occurs:—"Our Lobby Correspondent states that the King has been advised by the Government to create a now Imperial Honour as a distinction to be conferred 011 those who have rendered services to tho whole Empire. It is now under consideration whether distinguished women as well as men should not be recipients of this honour. The new Order will probably figuro in the Government's New Year's Honours' List, tho issue of which has beon postponed for a short time. "No decision apparently has yet been taken as to whether- the usual nolitical honours should bo included in the list, as well as war and other service honours." Apparently it was dccided that women should bo passed over. Tlio diamond wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Rowe was celebrated at Auckland 011 Saturday. Jlrs. Rowe is probably one of tho oldest residents of Auckland, as her parents arrived in Wellington in tro ship Bolton when slio was little m'6rp. than a baby, and shortly afterwards they camo on to tlio Waitcmata. That was so far back that Mrs.'lJowc was tliern before Governor Hobson removed tlio capital of New Zealand from Russell to Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Rowe havo eight children alive, forty grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren. Six grandsons am either in camp or at tho front, and news of the death, at the front, of a nephew, Alfred Trevartlion, was received on Friday.

A meeting of the "Surprise Bag Day" Committee is to bo held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, tho business to be dealt with being the presentation of the balance-sheet.

Mrs. Waters (Boulcott Street) has returned from a visit to Auckland.

Mrs. Thompson (Brooklyn), who is well known as a mountain climber, left last evening for Mount Cook.

Tlio Spinsters' Club, which has become so well known for its excellent work in tlio matter of providing comforts for our soldiers, is holding a jumble salo in tho Taranaki Street Mission Hall (St. Peter's), 011 Saturday afternoon next. Gifts of clothing, newer otherwise, will bo gladly received, and the committee it-ould be glad if intending contributors would leavo goods at any of the following residences: — Mrs. Burton, 169 Hanson Street, Newtown ; Mrs. Barker, Totara Road, Miramar; Mrs. Cattell, 128 Molesworth Street j Mrs. Batten, 6*l Brougham Street; Mrs. J. Myers, 256 tho Terrace; Mrs. Isaacs, Rona Bay. Tlio sale, it is hardly necessary to add, is being held for the purpose of augmenting tho club's funds for soldiers' comforts.

A meeting of Day's Bay ladies is being held at three o'clock this afternoon at Mrs. Coull's resilience, to make arrangements in conncction with their day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop.
