NAPIER PARK RACES

SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. By Tolograph. Special Correspondent. Napier, March 10. Though raised 171b. for his first day's win, backers again went for Hylaus in the Hack Hurdles. The Karaniu horse was improved by the race he had, and again led all the way. His jumping left littlo to ho desired, and there is no doubt about him being very useful. Tho Summit finished second as indicated on the machine. Surtax was again in a place, while Arlington, after chasing Hylaus for a mile, was done with early, and finished out of a place. Public form pointed to Cardrona in tho Telegraph Handicap, and the Lupin gelding whs made u hot favourite,, but after a good race he was beaten by Sabana in one of the finest finishes of tho meeting. The favourite was soon in front, and led Sabana, Dusky Eve, and Battle Song into the straight. He and Sabana then left the others, and in a ding-dong struggle over tho last half-furlong tha well-bred Sabana won by a head. It was a great finish, and both A. Reed and J. O'Shea excelled themselves. Dusky Evo was two lengths away, and then came "Battle Song, who did not shape as well as was expected. Multifual was a good favourite in tho M'Vay Memorial Handicap, and the first day's form worked out woll. After being well placed the whole way, tho Gisborne horaa camo away in the straight, and, resisting a strong challenge by Toka, who was badly placed over the first part, he won by three-parts of a length. Bjorneborg, who was tho pacemaker into the straight, was third., and then came Bon Reve, Tressida, Settler, and Indigo in that order. Thcro was a long delay at the start of tho race, but with' the exception of Multaine all got away well together. All started in the Kuao Handicap. The shorter distance was regarded as favourable to Lingerie, who was greatly improved by the first day's race. At the" barrier she was unlucky, but aided by a lucky run on tho fence she got up in time to win. Vermilion was first out, and led a bunched field into the straight, where Lingerie took charge Tho black filly had to bo hard ridden over the last half-furjong to stall oft' a strong win by Silver Tonguei Crowhurst got a bad run in the first part of the race, but he got through on tho rails in tho straight, aid was closo up third. Vermillion i".nd Elccution wero tho next to finish. Tho winner, who now carries Mr. E. Preston's colours, is back to her spring form, and will always bo useful over a 6hort course. The High-weight Handicap, onco round, was a splendid contest tho wholo way, and the different candidates wero all .proclaimed at different stages of tho race. Mistie, the favourite, was slow to jiiid his feet, and Pourparler led out of "tho straight, hut was steadied down the hack, and Blackall led a bunched field into the straight, where Mistic, Dispatch Carrier, and Pacific Slope put in challenges. Over tho last furlong tho wholo field was in it, hut in tho last fifty yards Mysteriarch ahot out.und won cleverly by a neck from Zeus, with Blackall a head away, followed by Dribble. Dispatch Carrier, and Pacific Slopo in that order. Tho riding of Pourparler was questioned, but as the jockey said ho was riding to instructions, and Trainer P. Davis corroborated this, 'tho matter went no further.

Hendra, Lady Kilworth, and Hymenaeus, wero the public selections for the Hack Scurry. The mare was badly kicked by Oriori going' out, and for some time it appeared as if sho would be unablo to take part. However, she was sent to tho post, and led tha field till within .a fow yards of tho judge's box, where Hendra headed her and won by a length. Yellow and Black, who showed a lot of pace, was close up third, and then camo Gold Song and Hymenaeus.

Form Up was at a short price in tho St. Patrick's Handicap, w'hich was a runaway victory for the littlo-fanciod Shiela, who took charge soon aftor tho etart, and was not again headed. Approaching the straight entrance Tote-a-Teto, Form Up, and Miss de Val were in a line, but the top -weight finished on best, and got second place by a head. Sea Lord and Miss do Val were next to the placed horses. Tho consistent Cardrona turnod up in tho Hack Welter, in which he was followed homo by the moderate Carillon. Hexton was withdrawn from tho race. By Telegraph—Press Association. The results are as follow:— OMAHU HURDLES, of 130 soys. One milo and a half. 1 Hylaus, Mst, 61b /... (Bush) 1 The Summit.
