WOMAN'S WORLD.

MATTERS OP INTEREST FROM FAR ANB NEAR. (By Imogen.)

SOCIAL ANB PERSONAL Red Cross Committee Meeting. A meeting of tho Wellington Women's Red Cross Committco was hold in tho Mercer Streofc Depot on Thursday morning, the president, Mrs. J. P. Luke presiding. Among the business matters dealt with was tho fixing of tho annual meeting, which, as the financial year ended on March 31, will be hold about the middlo of April. A motion was brought , forward by Mrs. Salmond to tho effect that any member of tho committee wishing to bring forward a motion for tho consideration of future meetings ehould send her proposal in writing to tho secretary no later than tho Friday before the oouimitteo met, so that it should bo printed on tho order paper. Tho meeting expressed appreciation of the work done at the Wellington Red Cross Shop. Already iho sum of £300 has been sent to England to tho Now Zealand Red Cross organisation, and noxt week it is anticipated that thero will be a further sum of £300 to bo forwarded to England. Members and workers at the Red Cross Depot are to bo responsible for tho Wellington- Red Cross Shop on April 13. Apologies for absence- wero received from Mesdames Joseph, Duthie, and Fitchett. During tho month .of February tho secretary reported , that a 'total of 15,629 hospital garments and necessities had been received at the depot,' and 15,048 dispatched to the different military hospitals in Now Zealand and also abroad. Theso goods were packed in 147 cases. New Matron of Wellington Hospital. After being in committee from 11.30 a.m. until after 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, the AVellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board announced that the position of matron of tho Hospital had been filled by the appointment of Miss Stott, tho present acting-matron, subject to the approval of the Minister. Entertainment at Anzac Club, Featherston. The usual Thursday night pntcrtainment at tho Club was largoly attended by soldiers and their friends. Mesdames Q. Donald, Archibald Clark, and Miss Card were the ladies in charge of the arrangements. Following a progressivo euchro tournament, a concert programme was rendered, those contibuting being: Miss Miiia Caldow, Miss Dora Varncy, Sergt. Zante Wood, Sergt. A. T. Maycs, Q.M.S. Greenhoiv, and Guiinor Dickie. It has been decided that tho Ladies' Committee will hold their weekly entertainments on Fridays in future. The Hotel Cecil. Tho commandeering of tho Hotel Ly the Air Board lias caused u bigger upheaval than in any previous raid of the Government (stales a. writer in tho "Manchester Guardian"). Shortly five hundred residents and visitors must fTO,_ and somo of the former have been living them for twenty years. During the war the_ Cecil has housed arniy officers at specially reduced terms, and theso officers will find it difficult to find quarters in the already overcrowded hotels. Dominion officers in administrative posts have made the placo their home. Tho Cecil has always been a favourite placo with American magnates and with foreign-spoken persons on confidential missions, who take suites of rooms.

In tho old days the Cecil was, 1 believe, the Inrgest hotel in London, and was certainly tho typical caravanserai of well-to-do foreigners. State guests at Coronation times and great international Gatherings have been housed hero. Overseas Premiers, for instance, have usuallv held thoir com?, in it. The great hall on the Embankment level hns been tho scene of countless banquets. Tho closing will mean the disnersal of a staff of some seven hundred men and women.

It is probable that the next piece nf commandeering will not be an hotel, but;a famous block of residential ilats.
