THE TURF

NAPIER PARK MEETING Cai , WON BY TRIALS, By Telegraph—Svcoiel Correspondent. Napier, Haick 9. J lie A'apior Park Meeting opened today. A Blight shower fell at the start of the meeting, hut the weather was fine later. Tho going was fair. Tho tolnlisntor handled iE16,385. Blackheart was withdrawn from tlie Hack Hurdles, for which tho Summit and Hylaus were evenly backed: Tho latter led all the way and won nicely, being greatly aided by his light weight and tho fact that his most dangerous op.'ponents, Arlington and The Summit, were soon out of tho way, the former getting leffcand The Summit falling. Surtax and Gloria were following the Karainu horse the whole way, and they linished in that.order, lumbombi was pulled up and Bodenham struck a fence Heavily. The winner is not rearly ready, and is capable of considerable improvement. Tressida, who had an engagement later in the day, was withdrawn from the Esk Handicap, as were War Tax and Woodrow, who vzere hold up in Gisborne. The presence of Cardrona seemed to frighten tho public off tho other horses, several witli credentials not getting the support expected. At tho start the favourite got caught fo tho tapes, and Honey Bee and Sabana led Goldshot and ItaumaniwjUri into the straight. Over the last fiftyyards Cardrona got up and won by a neck from the two.leaders. Perfidy was observed finishing very fast, and got fourth place. Blackall was the only withdrawal from the Cup, and it was a well-conditioned field that went to tho post. Multifual was backed down to a ehort price, with Llanishen and Multiplication best supported of tho others. There was some delay at the start, but Mr. Wood got a good, dispatch. At the stand, Settler, Trials, and Multifual led a bunched field. Going past the six furlongs Settler was two lengths out from Cleft, with Trials and Multiplication next. Down the back Indigo moved up and took second place at the half-inile, where Settler was out four lor.gths. Entering tho straight, Teka and Trials moved up. At the distance Settler was in trouble, and Multifual shot out to challenge Trials, but the' light-weight held lis own and won nicely. Multifual beat Settler by a neck, and then came Indigo, Teka, and Cleft, with' Multiplication well back, leading tho others. Thero was a lot ©1 Bumping in tho race, and Llanishen was nearly down going out of the- straight. The ton-weight also got a bad passage. An inquiry was held into tho humping of Llauislien, and Nodder, rider of Cleft, IV The fi i n otaf a very big field, in the Trial Stakes, but only three of the'runners were backed. Nottata finished up a good favourite, with Battle Song next choice, followed by tho Ormond bracket. At the start Lady Kilworth shot out, and led Hvenaeus to the straight, with Battle j Song handy. The latter look charge a furlong from home, but over tho last | bit he was doing his best to beat Nottata, who did not faro to well at tho barrier. Lady Kilworth was close up, and then came Beliair. The Irish-bred Cynjc is I a good-looking horse, and was finishing .■ on well. Ho 6hould be at home over! a distance. Pourparler was at a very short pneo for tho Welter Handicap, but after having every chance to win she got beaten out of a place. At the start Hexton led, but • soon gave way to Pourparler and Zeus. Passing the half-mile Step ran to.the front, and was first into the straight,, with Pourparler, Zeus, and Hygia aiext. Inside the distance Dispatch Carrier headed the leaders, but over the last part Bon Eev<> came with a rattle, and won by half. a length. Zeus was two lengths away, and Pourparler was fourth. Tho winner would have been unlucky to get beaten as ho was bumped badly and sent back to last just after the start. An inquiry was held into tho crossing of Zeus by Dispatch Carrier, but tho judge's. placings were not disturbed.

The Sapling Stakes was a great race. Silver Tongue was a good favourite, but after looking a winner Chuckle finished too well and beat him. At the start Lingerie showed all her old dash, and was followed into the straight by Bonny Marsh, Vagabond, and Silver "Tongue. The latter came fast and headed the others, but Chuckle caught ( imd beat him on the post, while Lingerie 'struggled on into_ second place. Crowhurst, who looked a bit lusty, was running on in fourth place. Multnine and Seashore were missing when the field paraded for the Hack Welter Handicap. The Australiiin-bred Hendra was a good favourite, but after a' lot of bad luck in running, an outsider in Ttylstone, who is a enst-off from Mr. E. J. Watt's stables, beat him by a • narrow margin. Carillion, the second favourite, was third, and Manhattan, who made the early running with the winner, was close up fourth. ,Tho favourite jwas unlucky after going a furlong, and was sent back to last place. Tho concluding event provided a sensational finish. The Trentham mare . Miss de Val was favourite, but she failed badly, an<{ was not sighted on the voyage. At the start Sea Lord and Tete-a-Tete wore riuickpst to begin, but after going a furlong Tressida took charge and led Sea Lord and the other pair into the straight. Here Tcte-n-Teto appeared to have the measure of her field, but tliß weight told, and in a great finish Tressida sts.yed on and beat Sea Lord, with 'Form TTp, who cot a bad ran, flyimr in third placo. Tete-a-Toto was I fourth, and then came Potentiality and Miss de Val. DETAILED RESULTS. By Telegraph—Press N Association. 01LAEANUI HUHDLES. A Press Association message from Sydney states that Killjoy, Tho Toff, and Tho Monk have been scratched for the St. Leger. The Westland Eacing Club, Hokitika, recently celebrated its jubilee very successfully. Tho race meeting at Hokitika early in January was quite a record from every point o£ view. The club is out now with its Easter jubilee programme. This meeting will be- bold on Wednesday of Easter ireok (April II). when stakes to tho value of .£"00 will be given for eeven events, two of which are trotting races. The principal galloping event is worth 200 sove., over a mile and a quarter, and the chief trotting raco is for 100 sovs., over a. milo and' a half. Nominations for all events close on March 30. On the dny follosring the Jubilee Meeting the Westland Trotting Club will supply a day's sport on the Hokitika trotting track. < It is 'believed that the introduction of thfe totalizator in New South Wales and its probable advent in Victoria influenced the bidding at the yearling.sales (states a Press Association message from Melbourne); Several sportsmen were not inclined to onter into ownership under the old conditions, and are seeking yearlings to carry their colours immediately the machine is installed.
