THE CITY MAYORALTY
The deputation which waited upon Mk, J: P. Luke yesterday to ask him to again offer his services as Mayor of Wellington voiced what wo bcliove to be the wishes of the great majority of citizens. Much of the work accomplished by Me. and Mrs. Lukk has necessarily como under public notice in the past few years, and has won the esteem and admiration of all, but no one, we venture to say, can adequately realise the full burden of work undertaken by the Mayor, and Mayoress and carried through with such cheerful good nature, and such conspicuous success. They havo indeed especially distinguished themselves in connection with matters arising out of the war, and in this respect have displayed a sympathetic understanding of tho social and personal needs of our soldiors, a practical good nature, and a kindliness of heart that has meant a great deal indeed to many thousands of men setting out to or returning from tho war. It has been a trying period during which Mb. Luke has held office; it has imposed on him and on Mrs. Luke tasks and duties which must havo taxed even their tireless energy and buoyancy of spirit to tho utmost; but they have proceeded from one task to another with unabated enthusiasm, uncomplainingly taking on their already heavily-weighted shoulders burdens which they might reasonably have expected others to carry. Mr. Luke, we are pleased to note, has his willingness, in the existing circumstances, to again offer his services to the city. Citizens are to bo congratulated on his decision, for his record as a war-time Mayor is cue which has brought credit to the city as well as to himself ab its first citizen.
