FARMERS AND THE WAR
THE LABOUR PROBLEM. The following resolution has' been passed by the Hukanui Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union:—"That this meeting of the Hukanui Branch of the New Zealand farmers' Union view with grave concern tho continued conscription of men from the farming industry. At the present moment nearly 40,000 rural workers have been enlisted inflicting such a drain upon, the industry that production is being greatly restricted and increasing evidence of this will be forthcoming during the ensuing season owing to tho inability of farmers to continue to work at the extra pressure'* necessary to make up for the lack of skilled assistance. Tho Government is urged to take steps to provido fresh labour which mnjr bft used in conjunction with the nucleus of experienced workers still remaining on the farms. Furthor conscription of skilled workers is greatly deprecated until such time as tho new labour has had time to adjust itself to its now conditions. The proposal to manage farms by committees in conjunction with inexperienced and untried labour, is regarded as extremely hazardous, and it would be unjust to expect men to leave their capital in siieh hands."
