Despite tho fact that ho has to carry [Ist. 21b., which is a, very big weight for a throe-yoar-old, Form Up may bo favourite fo'r tho Vlying Handicap at Napier to-morrow. Tho Hastings liorao has started seven times this season, and his record reads four wins, two fioconrts, and a, third. MEDICAL STUDENTS AND THE W,AR CALL

WHY THEY DID NOT ENLIST. By Telegraph—l'retjs Association. Dunedin, March 7. At. the opening of 1-Sio Medical School Dr. Ferguson, Doan of tho Medical Faculty, replied to statements nia<lc b.v tho Hon. G. W. Russell in refi-ror.ee lo medical students and enlistments. After stating that the matter was purely a military one, and had nothing to do with tho Public Health Department. I)r. Ferguson said that. students rofrflinotl from enlisting on Surgeon-Gcn-eral Henderson advising them to stick to thoir studios. Some, twenty-four students worn brought back from tho war last year. Tho Government was instrumental in securing tlio reloaso of j Dr. Drer.nan from tho Imperial au- ■ thprities to oomo out, and teach tho third-year class, in which wcro soren lion who had boen brought half round tho world by thn Goynrnniont for tuition. Ho thought tlioy were 'justiliod in inferring till a month ago that tho Primo Minister, fho .Defence Minister, the Minister of Munitions, tho Diroc-tor-General of Medical Services, tho Commandant, and tho Imperial authorities agreed on tho necessity of keeping the school going. Tho Officers' Training Corps must automatically cease if Mr. Russell's views wero given effect to. Hβ contradicted tho insinuation that students'- sheltered behind the school to avoid military service. Tlio school was the only source of supply for houso surgeons for hospitals, and last September it sent twelve or fourteen fifth-year students as actinghouse surgeons to replace! qualified iiion. Similar arrangements could lie made- this yoar, hut if tho present thirdyear class was sent into the firing-line this expedient cannot bo adopted at tho end of next year, and in Pcbuary, 1920, tho graduation class will conipriso merely a fow girls and such men as have been declared medically unfit. If they had thirty graduates tlioy could all bo placed in "civil life. Of seventeen graduates, four had been drawn m tho ballot, and fivo had volunteered, leaving eight to fill twenty vacancies for houso surgeons. If the war continued till 1920 tho supply of young mon that military service had boon getting would ceaso absolutely.Tho Chancellor (Rov. Cameron) suggested that students should not enlist till the University Council recejved an answer from tho Health Department to ft request for a conference with Dr. V>lintinc and Geiisffal-Surgeon-Hender-son.
