BOWLING TOURNEY
CHAMPION SINGLES
NEWTOWN AND KELBURN IN FINAL
There- was a big bank throughout yesterday at the Newtown Club's green to witness the play in connection witli the Pairs Championship of the "Wei— lingtou Centre, an oyent that always creates tho liveliest interest, next to the Kinks amongst the' bowling fraternity. Eacli club was represented by a strong pair, either nominated ur tiio winners of the Club Pairs, and some- very' good play was witnessed. Tho Newtown. club's ereeii is showing the effect of hard wear. It is pretty patchy, and there are sections of bare earth along the edgo nearest the western ditch. The green, possibly with tho exception of the freakish No. 7, played well. It was a dry, keen lireen, and lack of "paddock" or too much of it, told its tale most emphatically. The weather was bright and .sunny, with the gentlest of breezes,on the lawn. The first round saw some surprises. Tho Wellington Club's representatives, who were nominated (Hill and Churchward), were knocked out by Lyall Bay (Reid and Burgess) by a substantial margin, and .such steady "draws" as Houldsworth and Warwick (representina Te Hiwi) went down to Ward and Barnes, of s the Hataitai Club. Some surprisingly bie scores were made in the round. Newtown piled up 29 to Karori's 9, and then the game was declared finished on the nineteenth head: Petone rattled up 32 to Upper 'Hutt's 14, and Kelburn put Seatoun down to the tune of 32 to 15. In the Hutt-Victoria same the latter club's pair had to get three to tie or four to win on the final head. It got them, thanks to Sneddon's fine play. In the second round the interest quickened. Tho play of Spiers and Wylie (Newtown) was too good for Runt and Snaddon (Victoria). Hunt did not lead so soundly as in the'first Came, and Snaddon was not so secure as Wylie, nor was he so purposeful in his intentions. , Tt was not necessary to play the final bend. The battle between Hataitai ar.d Thnrndon was a roval one up to tho eighteenth bond, Barnes being very strong on the drive, but the last three heads saw Tliorndon ,cet seven points, which pulled them out of tho fire. 'Petone beat Lvall Bnv on Cole's drivmjr power. Time after time the Lyall Bay men drew 11"shot, and on e.ach occasion with deadly accuracy, lifted them out. Driving as a policv seldom wins a game, hut the exception which proves the rule occurred in tins came. Kplliurn nlayed a more heady came than Khandallah. The margin of points which divided the pairs nrcurntely reflected' the* difference m the play. In the semi-final round, which was commenced too late, and had to be finished in the moonlight, Newtown ■ scored an easy win over Thorndon, the issue never being in doubt after the twelfth head. Spiers came on again m this game, and drew with steady consistency, and Wylie was as wily as ever. The Kelburn-Petone game finish, ed later, and the last three heads were played after "the last faint pulse of quivering day" had departed, and only the moon was- left to guide tho bowls to the "jack." Curiously enough some of these heads were the best in the game. There were several touchers and on one occasion Coles, without being able to see the jack, trailed it beautifully, and lay the shot. Petoue required four to tio on the last head, but Gray lay a couplo when the last bowl was played, which gave him tho game. Whilst tho game bad its comical side, it is absurd that the arrangements did not permit of tho games being completed in broad daylight. A championship match should 'always be played under the most favourable conditions, and it should be the simplest matter to get off three .pairs matches between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The results of the various games in the three rounds played yesterday woro as follow:— ' FIRST ROUND. A 7 ictoria. (Hunt .and Snaddon) beat Lower Hutt (Gcmmell and Simpson), Lyall Bay (Reid and Burgess) beat Wellington' (Hill and Churchward), 21-13. ■ Newtown (Spiers and Wylie) beat Karori (Burn and Cooper), 29—9. Kbandallah (M'Arthur and Dumbell) beat Eastbourne (Cray and Powell), 24-13. ' Petone (Rennic and Coles) beat Upper Hutt (Harrison anct M'Loan), 32—14. Eelburn (Mayer and Gray) heat Seatoun (Magill and Green), 32—15. Hataitai, (Ward and Barnes) beat Tβ Hiwi (Houldsworth and Warwick), 22—12. . ' ' Thorndon (Upham and Thompson) beat -Johnsonville (O'Neill and Orr), 26-17. . SECOND ROUND. .' Newtown beat Victoria, 26 —15. , Thorndon beat Hataitai, 25—18. Petone beat Lyall Bay, 22—14.
