KING THEEBAW DEAD

ECHO OF A FORGOTTEN WAR. The death was recently announced of /lie pxJCing Theebaw of Burma, who was deposed by the British and scut to Madras in 1885.—E«utcr. Theebaw was the_ last King of independent Burma. In 1685, in consequence of Ms action in imposing a fine upon a British company, an ultimatum was served upon him, and on his refusal to comply with its terms a brief, but highly effective campaign was carried out under General Prendergast, which resulted in the capture of Mandalay and of the King himself, within a fortnight from the declaration of war. The King was deposed and deported to India, and Upper Burma, was annexed. Theebaw's reign had lasted only seven years, and was distinguished by great arbitrariness and frequent atrocities. •
