The Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, was at Te Awamutu on Tuesday on Prison Board business, and was to go on to Auckland from there on isupreme Court work.

Among the recipients of the Military Medal on the hospital ship which arrived here yesterday is Private J. M'Kendry, whose parents reside at Gore. The decoration was gained for distinguished and gallant conduct on tho field. Private M'Kendry saw considerablo service in Franco, and was present at the commencement of the' groat "push" last year on the Soramo. The particular act for which lie, received distinction ' was the rescue of a wounded comrade from "No Man's Land" during a : fierce battle at Atmontieres.

Advice has been received in Auckland that the Military Cross has been awarded to Captain Graham Cruickshank of the 54th Kootenay Regiment, Canadian Imperial Forces. .Captain Cruickshank is a native of Auckland, being the eldest son of Mr. ■ William Cruickshank. He had been resident in Canada for some years before going to the front, and has been in France about a year. .

Captain Rogers, of the Anchor Line, who camo up to Wellngton from Kelson to give evidence in the Arbitration Court, found when he reached the city: that he had been bitten by a. katipo spider, on tho leg, which was in a bad state, sufficiently so to prevent him attending the Court. At the Supreme Court yesterday Jlr. H. 11. Cornish, M.A.. LL.M., was (on tho motion of, Mr. 0. C. Mazengarb) admitted by Mr. Justice Stringer as a ■barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr. Cornish recently dissolved bis partnership with Mr. 'H. Amos as proprietor of Banks College to practise at the Bar, but retains his connection with tho college as lecturer in history and law.

Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes was on Tuesday elected; chairman of the Board of Directors of tho New Zealand Shipping Company.

Tho employees of Messrs. Wardell Bros, assembled at tho residence of Mr. G. Mouatfc, to bid. farewell to Pto. S. Reed, a lato member of tho staff, who is leaving for tho front with the Twenty-third' 'Reinforcements. Mr. J.
