PETONE AFFAIRS
, —4 . . THE SEWERAGE SCHEME. The Petone Borough Council hold a special meeting last evening. There were present:—The Mayor (illr. J. \V. M'Ewau), and Councillors Forsyth, (iaynor, Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, M'Dougall, M'Kenzie, and Jones. The sewerage engineer, in his report on tho cost of tho sewerage scheme, stated that the cost of tho work to date had exceeded the amended estimated cost of approximately £58,000 by £2110. This increase has been caused mainly by tho effect of tho war | on commercial life and the volume o* uncontrolled water which was met with. This necessitated additional pumping machinery. It was considered that the work would be completed in about six months.
The report, on the motion of Mr. M'Ewau, was referred to the Works Committee for detailed consideration.
The Mayor paid a tribute to Mr. 11, Fox, who had designed the scheme, and supervised its foundation. The work is being carried out most satisfactorily, and Dr. Frengley and the District Health Officer had complimented the borough on the way in which the scheme had been "carried out. The scheme was in their opinion superior to those in other towns in New Zealand.
As Mr. Fox is severing his connection with the borough at the end of this month, the Mayor moved, and it was carried unanimously, that nn illuminated address should be presented to him in recognition of the good services he has rendered.
