To-day we are told by Mr. Plailip Gibbs that this German move is a pre-arranged affair, due to a desire to shorten their lino and save men. It is a more fraught with danger to the enemy, who has been remarkably fortunate weather—hard frost a for heavy transport, and thick fog to screen his movements. Meanwhile the British are pressing: their advantage. Their latest success is east of Gommecourt and at Bouchavesnes. There aro report sof a projected Teutonic drive into Italy, but Italy, we are told ? face s the issue with every confidence. President Wilson, by a slim speci es of taotics in the Senate, has had his hands tied. A majority of both Houses favours the granting of war powers and the arming of merchantmen, to the President, but by a stonewall the business of the Senate was so tied up that, an adjournment sine die was reach ed, to the disgust and anger of the nation.
