THE FIFTH BALLOT
DRAWING BEGUN YESTERDAY. A ballot was begun yesterday to pre" vido tho recruits required, to cover ths' ascertained shortage in voluntary enllst-i meats for tho Tventy-ninth Reinforcements. When voluntary recruiting , foti this draft closed on' Saturday the shortage was 1501 men, and tho Government; Statistician was directed •to ; draw 4503 names from the roll of the First Division, thus allowing tho usual margin, for medical rejections, exemptions, etc. One district, the Bay of Plenty, had! provided a full quota Tjy voluntary enlistment, and did-not participate in tha ballot. North Canterbury, with, a quota, of 62 men, had failed to find a single voluntary recruit. .. M'Carthy, S.M, Tho Mayor of Wcllinston,, Mr. J. P, Luke, was present on behalf of the public. The drawing proceeded during tho day, and will bo completed this mornmjt or early this afternoon. Tho names ot tie men who lavo been selected for service will be published in the Gazetto later in tho week, probably on l'nday.
