SWIMMING

CARNIVAL AT EVANS BAY . Under ideal weather conditions ,and beforo an attendance of nearly two thousand people, the Evans Bay Swimming Club carried out its 1917 carnival on Saturday afternoon. The competitors wore in good form, and some very, close finishes resulted. Two outstanding features of tho afternoon were-*' tho intor-club race and tho 200 yds. open handicap. During the afternoon tho Tramways Band enlivened tho proceedings with a programme of music. A collection was taken up in aid of the Soldiers' Club. Result of the events are:— 50.yds. Boys' Handicap (Open).— Look, 1; Alexander, 2 j M'Culloct, 3. 50yds. Girls' Handicap: (Open).— Miss Fulford, 1; Miss Leslie, 2; Miss Goorgeson, 3. 50yds. Officials' Handicap—Bott, 1; Guise, 2; Flanuigau, 3. In tho evening a very successful social was held in St. Anno's Hall, being attended by about' seventy couples. ' During the evening the following contributed items:—Recitation, Mr. Woods; song, Miss Clark, song, Mr. Mallard; club swinging, Mr. Blight and Mrs. Fleming.

PROGRESS AT OHARUI. , On Thursday last Mr. Shields paid a visit to Ohariu, and gave a demonstration of trick swimming and life-saving to a very interested gathering of school children and parents. ■ Ho also explained minutely the correct method to be adopted in tho resuscitation of tho apparently drowned. On behalf of tho residents, Mr. S. Bryant, chairman of tho School Committee, thanked Mr. Shields for attending, and called for three cheers, which were heartily given. As a result of constant practice in two good ponds which tho School Commit too have made for thetn, almost all tho upper children .of this school can now swim. At sports hold recently, Ngaia Bryant gained tho medal for the girls' championship, Jean Nossitor being runner-up. Roy Haggerty just boat Philip Nossitor for the 'boys' championship. Other winners included Hiram Dunford, Lanco Bryant, Gordon and- d'atty Nossitor. PICNIC AT DAY'S BAY. On Saturday afternoon the lady members of tho Royal Life Saving and Swimming Club, also tho Island Bay. Worser Bay, and Hataitai Glubs held a combined picnic at Day's Bay. The weather was all that could bo dosired, and a very pleasant' afternoon was Bpent, about seventy members ' and their friends journeying to the Bay. A display in tho mothods of life-saviug was given by the members of tho Ladies' Royal Life-Saving and Island Bay and Swimming Clubs, and was much appreciated by tho many speotatora.

The following was the result of the races held during the afternoon: 60yds. Froo Style Handicap—Miss M. Troup. (Hataitei), 1; Miss D. Donnelly (L.R.L.S. and S.C.), 2. 50yds. Breast Stroke Handicap—Miss K. Pownall (Worser Bay), 1; Miss A. Walker (L:R.L.S. and S.C.), 2. 57yds. Married Ladies' Handicap—Mrs. Jones (Island Bay), 1; Mrs. Low (Island Bay), 2. 50yds. Freo Stylo (under 14)— Miss A. AValker (L.R.L.S. and 5.0.). 1; Miss F. Martin (L.R.L.S. and S.C.), 2. Teams' Race—Worser Bay (Miss K. Pownall and Miss M. Manthell), 1; L.R.L.S. and S.C. (Misses D. Donnelly and N. Edmanson),- 2. After'tho races, all adjourned to the Kiosk, whero afternoon tea- was provided, and the prizes were presented by Mr. G. S. Hill, chairman of tho Wellington Head Centre Royal LifeSaving Society.

Brief speeches wore given by Mr. Hill, Mr. Coy (president of the Island Bay Life-Saving and Swimming Club), and Mr. T. Shields, who all referred to tho good work done by tho Life-Sav-ing and Swimming Clubs. They all hoped that the outing would be the forerunner of many others. A N.Z. RECORD EQUALLED. Paterson, aged about_ eighteen, won the hundred yards provincial championship, equalling Malcolm Champion's Dominion record of Gl}sec.
