A Press Association messago from Sydney states tliafc Lieutenant" Carniichael, a member of tbo New South Wales Assembly, has beon awarded tho Military Cross.

Mr. 0. A. Jeffery, who has boon private secretary to the Hon. A. ST. Myers, goes into camp with tho next draft of N.C.O.S on March 6. Mr. Myers's now secretary is Mr. J. W. Black, lately private secretary for the Hon. Dr. M'Nab. The death occurred at Auckland on Tuesday, at the age of 69 years, of Mr. 0. C. Dacre, one of tho most famous "old-time" amateur athletes and sportsmen iri New Zealand. The late Mr. Dacre was probably the best-known man on tho Auckland waterfront, _ and for many years, carried on the business of .shipping agent. A Press Association cablegram from London records the death of General Sir Mowbray Thomson, the last survivor of tho Battle of. Cawnpore, fought < in December, 1857.

The resignations of the following teachers were accepted at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board:—OMiss Henderson, Waikawa Pa; Miss I. J. King, Coniston; Mrs. W. Markland, Tane; Miss M. Murray, Black Rock; Mr. C. Rondle, Worsor Bay; Miss N. Coad, Te Aro; Mrs. IV. Macfarlane, South Wollington; Miss J. D. Sargent, Newtown; Miss M. M'Callum, Blenheim. ; Advice lias been received of the death in action, in Franco of Captain Herbert William King, O.C. Sixteenth Reinforcements. Captain King had tho misfortune to lose his daughter, aged four years, a little over a year ago, and his wife diod'last March. A month later Captain King joined the Reinforcements as O.C. Sixteenth Reinforcements. For somq years he was a member of the teaching staff of tho Newtown Public School, and latterly of tho Auckland Grammar School. He ■was a Bachelor of Arts of the iNcw Zealand University, and for somo years attended the Victoria University College, -where he represented his university in the senior football and hockey teams, and also in five -tournament competitions. Tn these various activities Captain King's efforts were invariably crowned with the highest success. Ho was well known in amateur athletic circles, and made some notable achievements in tho field of sport. Combined with a very high order ot both physical and mental attainment. Captain' Kins; had all those splendid qualities of character that won for mm universal respect, and esteem. Widespread sympathy is felt for his relatives in Christohurcli.

At the. Jewish Club Rooms last mcdit a presentation was made to tlio late steward, Mr. L. Dryer, who has severed his connection with that institution lifter six years' service. The presentation consisted of a sold watch nml chain, siiilablv inscribed, and a ;«sovereicn nurse. The chair was occupied by Mr. 11. Cane, who refen-ed to Ihc Rood work performed by Mr. Drver. The members of tho Italian Opera Company and tho "WaybacUs" Company will leave for Sydney by tlio Manuka to-morrow. Tlio SelinskyAmadio Concert Company leaves for the south this evening, to givo a few farewell concerts. They will leave Wellington for Sydney on Thursday of next week.
