METHODIST CHURCH

ANNUAL CONFERENCE FIRST READING OF STATIONS annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand wa3 continued in Wesley Church yesterday, the Eev. G. Bond, in the alienee of the President, who was otherwise encased, being in the chair. A memorial from Gisbome asking for the withdrawal of the Home Missionary assistant to the minister was not entertained. Temperance and Public Morals. The report of the Temperance and Public Morals Committee was received and adopted. '•'■'h® following motions recommended by the committee were passed by conference : — (a) That the conference views with alarm the increasing mania for gambling in the community, and condemns the evil, principlo of State legislation under which totalisator betting, art unions', and rallies flourish in our midst. It professes profound Tegret that in the guise of patriotism license should have been given to those in authority to unworthy methods of raising money for our soldiers. While recommending the members and adherents of our churches to support liberally all legitimate means of raising funds for patriotic purposes, it strongly urges them to discountenance all forms of gambling as being vicious and detrimental to the best interests of the Stato. "(b) That in view of the swift and insidious growth of gambling Th the Dominion, this conference protests against the number of race days being increased by 31—whereby the spirit of gambling is being fostered, as is evidenced by the ever-increasing Bums'' that nass through the totalisator. This couterence impresses upon Ministers, Sun-day-school superintendents, and leaders of our ohurch, the necessity of giving definite instruction to the scholars of our Sunday schools on the evils of intemperance."

that this conference records its sense of disappointment, shame, and indignation at the recent decision of Parliament "p J csa . rd to - tne proposed early closing t « • ars - Such, a decision, in view of tho imperative need for economy, efficiency, and righteousness in these times pt national testing, wo feel to be not only lacking in true patriotism and statesmanship, but also an affront to the 100,000 electors who petitioned for this reform, and a serious violation of the principles of democracy." A deputation from the conference is to wait on tho ActingPrime Minister on this subject.
