MARAROA SAILS
BOUND SOUTH FOR DOCKING. Shortly after fi o'clock last evening the Mararoa'.sailed out of the port, carrying passengers and cargo for the south, where she is to be docked for any necessary repairs. During yesterday morning two divers were employed. One was occupied clearing away the thick wire hawser which had fouled tho propeller, and the other examining the plates along the bottom of the vessel. Tho man examining the plates did not go down again in the afternoon as he completed liis work in the morning and found nothing serious enough to stop the vessel going on to LytteUon last evening. Mr. A. Hans, the diver who went down to the aid . of AValter Smith, the diver who eht iuto trouble with the cable on Sunday, was engaged in clearing the propeller, and his work was long and arduous!. He went down at 8.30"a.m. yesterday, and with the exception of an hour for lunch, did not get the hawser cleared until 8.45 p.m. Just before 4 p.m., he came to the surface, having cleared the propeller, and shortly afterwards, the huge knotin tho hawser which had been- caught round the propeller was brought to the surface. Speaking to a Dojiiniok ■ reporter, Mr. Hans explained that it was impossible to. do anything with his hands alone to get the hawser _vntangled, and he. had to cut right through it. This was done with- a small saw suitable for such work. He also reported that the propeller was very slightly damaged. Nothing had been bent or loosened below, nnd with the exception of a few small pieces which had broken out of the edges of the blades, no barm had been done. How hard it had been to disengage the hawser could he judged from the tan tie which had been round the propeller blades. During -the day large crowds wateiied the proceedings. It is expected that the Mararoa will be back in the ferry service by next week, if not before, as the damage is estimated to be very , slight.
A preliminary inquiry will be held into the stranding of the vessel by the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at ■Wellington this morning. '
