FAILURE TO ENROL
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR JOINED. By Teiegraph-Pres3 Association* Auckland, February 26. !At the Police Court to-day, J. A* Brailsford pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to enrol in the Expeditionary Force Reserve, explaining thablie hact dono so because of conscientious scruples. Ho had, ho said, written, to tlio Department (instead of filling _in an application for enrolment) slating that it was against his conscience to fill in the form or havo anything what- i over to do with organisation for mili- . tary purposes. Before tho war he generally attended church, though not. a member of a church, but on account, of the attitude taken- up by the Churches on tho war he liad ceased to attend church at all, and eventually ho joined the Society of Friends. He was a journalist by occupation, but. could not continue that occupation after the outbreak of war in consistency with his conscientious convictions. Ho'tried farming and school teaehing, but when he informed his employers of his attitude as to the war they could not keep him on, and ho Had had the greatest difficulty in getting along. Defendant was fined £5 and costs.
