The death has occurred in .Scotland of Mr. William Common, one of the founders of the well-known Gisborne firm of Common, Shelton andl Co., Ltd., in the very- early days, the business being first founded in 1878 under the namo of Murray, Common and Company. Later 011 it was- known as W. Common and Company, and became Common, Shelton and Company in 1882. The late Mr. Common was a resident of Scotland for the past 30 years.
Flight Lieutenant Scotland, who served with the Royal Flying Corps in Mesopotamia and was invalided! back to New Zealand, has been suffering from a return of the fover caught in that campaign. He had applied for the post of instructor at the Canterbury Aviation School, but he felt that his health would not permit him to undertake the work, and withdrew his application.
The funeral of tho late Mr. Benjamin Burch took place on Saturday afternoon in tho Greytown Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev, A. W. Oompton. Tho ohief mourners were: Messrs. C. and B. Burch, brothers of the dteased, and tho pall-bearers Messrs. J. Jury, R. Sheet, A. Balfour, and E. Hutton. Many old settlers were present. The late Mr. Burch was 63 years of age. 1 Mr. E. W. Houghton, who is representing the Tourist, Motor Co., Ltd., Hastings, accompanied by Mrs. Houghton, is .visiting .Wellington for a few days. '
> At its recent meeting, the Wellington Education Board, on a motion proi posed by Mr. A. Mackay, of Blenheim, and _ seconded by Mr. »A.' W. Hogg, unanimously placed on record its high appreciation of .the long and useful services rendered to the cause of education by the late Mr. John. Smith, formerly secretary and inspector of the Marlborough Board, -and a letter of sympathy was sent by the board to tbo members of his family. It was pointed out that Mr. Smith had, during & very long_ official career, rendered sen ices in pioneer education work which have been pf extreme value to this country, but more especially to the outlying districts in which for many years he laboured so successfully. Beginning his career in New Zealand as headmaster of the Boys' School, Nelson, ho held in succession the important positions of inspector to the Westland and Grey districts, and secretary to the Marlborough distriot, the fornjer office in the latter of which he ultimately relinquished with advancing years. It is to be_ added, the late Mr. Smith had gained the high esteem of'a very large circle of friends and acquaintances by his uprightness of charaoter.
Mr. E. T. DoddTell, who has held a responsible position in the D.1.C., Wellington, for tho past five years, has been appointed manager for Messrs. Adair Bros., Gisborne. Mr. Hill has had much experienc-s as instructor, both in the solo system and the dual control, that ho is acquainted with most, types of aoro engines and thoroughly understands their care * and maintenance. Amongst his other testimonials is one which will appeal to New Zealanders. It was written by Lieutenant Do Bathe Brandon, who was one of Mr. Hill's pupils.
