LEARNING TO SWIM
ENCOURAGMENT OF JUVENILE PROFICIENCY. Swimming delegates concerned chiefly with swimming amongst., school children held a short conference in Wellington on Saturday. Mr. F. Bowler (Christoliuroh) presided, and the other delegates were: Messrs. P. N. Rundlo. (Christchurch); B. O'Neill (Now Zealand Council), .T. H. Knudsen (Now Zealand Council'', W. B. Jerrom (Auckland), H. W. Cooker (Waneanui), 11. Simmonds (llawko'3 Bay), H. C. W. Blick (Wellington), H. Bowman (Westland), L. A. G. B.iab (Otago), and A. M. Fanioll (South Canterbury;. Tho chairman, in opening the proceedings, said it was desirable that delegates should meet every year. I A discussion the:-, took place on the subject of making swimming compulsory at tho schools, nnd the meeting was unanimous in the opinion that swimming should be included in 'ho school curriculum. A. proposal was brought forward to tho effect +,hat the physical branch of the Department of Education sliould bo urged to issue certificates to pupils who have learned to swim, and to tlioso who can swim distances, but the general opinion was that tho matter was one which sliould bo left to the New Zealand Swimming 'Association. The conferoncc decided to recommend i centres to urge clubs to admit schools I to membership, and to eater as far as [possible for the juniors. A motion was adopted in. favour of
compiling standard times for the provincial school championships and the Dominion schools championships.
SCHOOL CHILDREN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS. At the To Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon swimming and diving events were hold, and the Dominion School Children's Championships decided. There was "a large attendance of interested spectators, who were fortunate enough to seo somo very close finishes, and at least ono race that will long ronmin in their memories. This was the Boys' -140 Yards Championship, in which H. von bturmer (Auckland) and S. Hogg (Napier) engaged in a terriflo struggle for the honours.
