NOTES AND COMMENTS
j'Bt Glencoe.7 The Wanganui meeting will be concluded tonday. In the Autumn Handicap form points to Golden Grafton, 7st. 81b., who has only lib. more than when she ran Cleft to a head on the opening day. - The useful Henry Clay has Bst. Bib. in the Harrison Hack Handicap, and may encounter most opposition from Pohehe, who has a big pull in the weights. '...-.. '. lloutoa Queen ha 6 beon penalised a stone for her win on the opening day; and this may find out. the Fordell mare. Munition, Bst., is nicely placed in tho handicap. . In the'Fordell Hurdles Kurapai, who contested the Cup on the opening dayj may be found more at home over fences. He is "a splendid jumper, and will not be required to meet tho first day's win•ner. , The light-weights will set a very solid pace in the Wanganui States, one mile' and a half, but the top weight Bunting should be well served by this. In the Cup he was a winner halfway down the running, which points to tho shorter course suiting him. Crownhead ecored so decisively on the opening day that he may be made first choice in the Okoia Hack Welter Handicap, six furlongs. The company is not by any means strong, and the Waverley horse should be well able to handle his weight. Form Up, winner of the Plying Handicap on the opening day, is not engaged in the Farewell Handicap to-day, but Chakwana has been paid up for. The Trentham mare will not be worried by the pace over the first part, and should be enabled to gain the rails without difficulty. This is a big advantage, and should tell heavily in her favour. Mr. H; G. Taylor, owner of Bee, would like to-take the mare to Bandwjek for the big autumn meeting, but owing to the difficulty of obtaining a passport to leave the country tho trip is likely to be abandoned. '". "'. Tho Newmarket Handicap, six furlongs, will be run at Flemington. to-day. The running in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield last Saturday should be a good guide to the result. , AVoorak, who scored at Caulfield, has earned a 101b. penalty, and may be allowed to forfeit his engagement. The 'favourite may be Balarang, who put up a course record at Eandwick, and was in third place in the Oakleigh Plate on Saturday. Owners should note that acceptances for the Nelson Meeting close pn Monday next. A Dunedin writer says: "There was 6ome indifferent riding displayed last week, and this was all the more noticeable because good riders were on the ground whilst their inferiors in the saddle had mounts." A reminder is given that entries for the Rangitikci Meeting close on Tuesday next. . Mr. C. A. J. Levett, of Kiwitea, one of the oldest stewards of the Feilding Jockey Club, and one of the most respected residents of the district, has been elected president of the Feilding Jockey Club, vice the late Mr. W. A. Bailey. The imported mare, Fotherinpay. figures among the nominations for the Trial Plate at the Waimate Meeting next 'month. She has not raced yet, but she' is doing well on the tracks, where she has demonstrated more than once that she can muster up a good burst of speed. The secretary of one of the most popular of our country racing clubs is reported to have experienced a very unpleasant few hours at the. close nf the annual gathering quite Tecently. The uneasiness was caused by the temporary loss of his handbag containing some, hundreds of cash. It appears that he was in tho company of another gentleman, who also owned a handbag, and by some chance the latter departed with the wrong basr. However, the mistake was discovered tho same evening, but not until tlin secretaTv referred to had cause to reflect on the risk of losing complete control of his brief ba.", even for the instant when it disapneared. The bag contained riding and other fees, which any secretary of a racing club must bpcome possessed of during an afternoon's racing. Peronilla was given another turn over the pony hurdles at Biccarfon on Tuesday. After jumping the first.obstacle she met wifli a mishap at tho second, her rider. P.. M'Seveney. being dragged off through his foot catching in the wing of the hrardle. On b'sinp remounted the mare jumped the pony hurdles smartly, and then gave a very attractive display over two. of the bic hurdles. She went straight at all' the obstacles and jumped .very fast. The only drawback to a svc. cwsftil career over fences for Mr. AY. Nidd's mare is that she is on the «::•.:!: side, and a bit of weight will slwny trouble her.
