OF THE FIVE ' , YEARS' AVERAGE. 7 • According to the International Institute of "Agriculture, Rome, the world's- yield : of wheat bo far as is known ac present from sixteen coun- ; tries in. the northern; hemisphere and two in-the southern, hemisphere is this year only 74.7 pet; .cent, of the 1915 yield ? and 91.2 per. cent, of the five, years'.-; averagp.. from' 1909-14. . The current harvest of Argentina is officially, assessed at no more than 44.8 percent, of the 1915 crop and 62 per icenW-' of the average. Australia, on the other hand, expects to reap 104 , per cent, of last year's crop and 164 . per; cent.-on the: five years' average. ' The world's barley supplies this year i . are 90.7 per cent, of the 1915 yield and 101.1 per cent, of the average, but the comparisons in the case oats fell to , 85.7 per cent: and 102.3 per cent. To the' Board of Agriculture the International Agricultural Institute has con■tribtued the following additional inform •illation:— • . , . -'.The production"of wheat for the cur- ' irent season' is estimated at 79,682,000 cwts. in Australia, ,41,461,000 cwts. in (Argentina, 114,977000 owts. in France, and' 342,805,000 cwts. in- tlie United States (winter and spring together). The. French barley crop is estimated at .16,888,000 cwts. Oats are expected to produce 9,603,000 cwts. in Argen- - ,'tina, 81,256,000 cwts. in France and " cwts. in the United. States. - i' ' " 1 • >
The yield of. rye in France is put at" 17,945,000 cwts., and'in the United States *at 23,692,000 cwts. The production of maize in'tho United States at 1,291,623,000 cwts. 1 Tho total production of wheat i Canada, United States, British India, European Russia, United Kingdom, France, Spain'/ Italy, -Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Rumania, Switzerland, Japan, Egypt, and Tunis is given at 1,327,523,000 cwts., and of rye in Canada, United States, European RusBia, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, and the Netherlands at 494,473,000 cwts. The total production of barley, in the same countries as for wheat, with the omission of India, is estimated at' 439,485,000 cwts., and of oats, in the same countries as for barley with the exception of Egypt, at 902,313,000 cwts. while the production of maize in Canada, United, States, European Russia, Italy, Switzerland, and Japan is given at 1,372,248,000 cwts. . As coraapred with the corresponding average crop in the years 1909-13, these estimates represent increases of 1.1, 3.2. and 12 per cent, for barley, oats, and ryo, and decreases of 9.1 and 5.3 per cent, for wheat and maize respectivelv.
