BOYS' INSTITUTE
A social in connection with the Boys' Institute was held this week to celebrate the opening of the boys' work for the year. In ali, 350 hoys were present, and they did full justice to the good things provided,, and duly appreciated the efforts of the various artists to entertain them. Mr. 6. A. Troup (president) welcomed the old and new boys_ to the institute, and urged them to" maintain the honour of the institute which stood so high in the estimation of the public. Mr. F. Ross (director) then briefly described the various classes, which will include gymnastic, physical drill, scouts, cadets, drum and fife band, wrestling, swimming, life-saving, distance swimming, educational classes, cricket, "soccer", Rugby, Sunday evening service, etc.
The director pointed out that the institute catered for boys of all religions, and ..especially was the poorer type of boy welcomed. Annual membership is the same as last year, namely :—Juniors, 10 to 12, Is.; intermediates, 12 to 15 years, Is. 6d.; and seniors, 15 to 18 years, 2s. per annum, which entitles the members to a swim in the 'baths every evening between 6 and 7.30 o'clock, and to join all the classes free of any additional cost. The membership of the" institute at the present time is 450 boys, new members are now Tjeing enrolled, and boys are urged to avail themselves of this opportunity to advance themselves in life.
