POULTRY NOTES
(By Chanticleer.)
' The Conference. The annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Association promises great success at Easter. During the year much interest has been taken, in the poultry ' industry from an organising point of view, and it is expected there will bo a larger representation this year than on previous occasions. The annual yoar or the association closes on February 28, and judging from, remits already to hand the conference should be helpful to the industry. The Competitions. We are particularly well supplied with egg-laying tests and this year no fewer than four will be held Two new tests are to be held in the North Island, one at Masterton and the other at Auckland. Both are being largely assisted by private enterprise which is most fortunate ?or competitors. It is to be hoped they will serve a useful purpose, and lead to further interest in the industry. Returned Soidiers. Quite a number of returned soldiers have signified their intention to go in for poultry farming. It will be a pity to see them do this in haphazard form as they are more than likely to fail. I Some soheme should be adopted to give thorn experience in the work. Poultry culture is most intricate and great attention has to be paid to detail. There is ample scope for extra production of eggß and poultry in the country, but it cannot be made without experience. Bumblefoot. E. Morrish writes: "My fowls.are suffering from sore feet, and I have had to kill soma of them off. What is the cause of; the complaint?" Answer.—Your birds are suffering from bumblefoot, caused through jumping on to a hard floor. If you have concrete you do not want tho perches more than a foot from the ground. Except directly under the perches you should have some chaff or straw. If the swelling are lanoed the bird will soon recover. During treatment place her in a box containing straw. Poultice the foot after being lanced and the bird should soon recover. The Dry Mash, The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" writer of poultry notes says:— "The Australian test proves that the dry-mash fed birds can more than hold their own against their wet-mash fed 6isters _in regard to mere production,' which in itself is a sufficient triumph for the new system. But when <wo take into account , the economic virtues of. dry feeding by way of labour saving, tho higher physical condition of the flock and the check upon waste in food, it is shown to be an all-round advance upon any previous system and an idea which must eventually appeal in a general sense to all who are interested in the production of egga for profit. I believe I have previously asserted in this, column that this new system of feeding will have a substantial future effect upon commercial poultry-keeping in this country, and will be influential in placing the industry upon a more profitable footing and stimulating its growth and development. The publication of tho Australian test figures has considerably strengthened that assertion.. It. was Australia who gave us our deep layers, therefore let us accept Australia s improved methods of feeding the improved Instruments of production and pront sno Jins given us.
