CLERGY AND THE WAR,

Auokland, February 21. The half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Cathplic Federation is being attended by delegates from all parts of tho Dominion. Resolutions wore unanimously adopted as follows:—"That this meeting, on behalf of the Catholics of nl ?| eal ? nd l protests against the Catholic clergy and-religions being compelled to serve under the Military Service Act on the following grounds: (1) .that such compulsion of clergy and •religions is abhorrent to the minds of Catholics and_ without precedent in tho i'jnglish-speaking countries; (2) that the number of such clergy is too insignificant to make their service as soldiers of material value in winning the war; (3) that the religious ministrations of all such clergy and religions are absolutely necessary within the Dominion ; that this meeting earnestly hopes and trusts the authorities will take immediate steps to have all such persons exempted from such service; that this meeting., fully supports the action taken by Archbishop O'Shea in this matter, and assures the hierarchy of Now Zealand of its earnest assjstance iii any further action they think advisable, and that-copies of these resolutions be sent to tlie Acting-Prime Minister." •
