ANOTHER BEAUMONT HAMEL
INTENSE AIR ACTIVITY
STEAMER SINKS A PIRATE
ACTIVITY IN 'THE BALKANS
Owing to 'thunderstorms interfering with the overland lines in 'Australia, the- cablegrams are coming through, very slowly, and in scraps; Thero has been no new development on the Western front. Explanatory dispatches indicated that the latest British success at Miraumont rivalled the battle of Beaumont Hamel in scale and vigour. The French, at the recent fight at Maison de Champagne, lost around which matters very little, and can be recovered at will. The Germans aro making great efforts to counter the Allies' supremacy in the air, and boast of some new high-speed war planes which carry from five to ax machine-guns. Von Hindenburg's views on the war show that he thinks he can carry on indefinitely, and admits that the Allies can also. Therefore to shorten the war the super-frightful campaign at sea is, to his mind, justified. There are indications of heavy fighting on the Italian front, in .tiho. Balkans, with general activity right along the Allies' front.
