Sir James Allen is expected back from the south, to-morrow morning. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald will return from Hastings to-day, arriving by the Main Trunk express at 6.40 a.m. The Hon. A. T. Maginnity, M.L.C., arrived in Wellington by tho Pateena from Nelson last night; Sir Ernest Shackleton will leave Wellington for the South Island on Friday. Ho will deliver a lecture in ' Christohurch on -Saturday night, ; and will visit Timaru and Dunedin before returning to Wellington' on> Thursday of next week. . . • Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for Waikato, is at present in Wellington. - Captain. J. K. Davis, who wis master of the Antarctic vessel Aurora, during her recent trip to the Southern Continent, returned from a visit to Ohristchurch yesterday. Whilst there, ho was given a reception by the Mayor and leading citizens of Ohristchurch. Mr. Hugh Campbell was yesterday reelected chairman of tho Hawke's Bay River Board. His Grace Archbishop Redwood left for Auckland on Monday. Mr. G. Coghill, who has occupied the position of manager of the New Plymouth branch of tho Union Bank of Australia for. tho past four years, will go into camp next month. Tho Military Medal has been awarded to the lato Private D.. P. Geauey, of Bruunorton, arid will be given by the Defence authorities in Christclrurch to his' mother. Private Goaney was severely wounded in France in July arid died from the effects of the wounds. Major E. Harrowell has been posted for duty at Samoa.
At St. Peter's Church, Vpncr J ?ip - I carton, on Sunday, Bishop Julius unveiled . a tablet in monioVy • of .Second Lieutenant Inn Patrick Oampbell, first Battalion,- Cameron Highlanders, who was killed in aetion in Franco in tlio early part of 1915. Lieut. Campbell was tho younger son of tlio late Mr. Patrick .Campbell, (if Pieeartou, and brother of Kinluch'C. Campbell, of the Black AVatch. There was a. large congregation, including His Honour Sir Johu Dennistoa and Lady, Deimistta.
At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers motions were carried expressing condolence with the relatives of the late Messrs. K. R. Watson (Wellington), and W. M. Durant (Dunedin), two members who have fallen at tho front. Mr. W. J. Napier arrived from Auckland by tho express yesterday afternoon.
Quartermaster-Sergeant A. E. Hunt, reported killed in action in France on February 7,-was a brother of Mr. J. A. Hunt, of the Railway Department, and for a number of years prior to enlisting was on. the staff of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co., Wellington. Sergeant Hunt first volunteered foi service with the advance guard which went to Samoa at the : commencement of the war, and on his return to New Zealand enlisted in the Expeditionarj Forces and left with tho 4th Battalioi of the Rifle Brigade. Tho deceased was a member 6f the Waiwetu Golf Club, and was very popular. Tho death occurred yesterday morn inc of Mr. Robert Turlington NobleBeasley, formerly gaoler' at Wanganui Deceased, who was 73 years of age, wai the youngest son of Mr. John Beasley who for nearly fifty years was agent oi Earl Spencer at Northampton. Born ai Chapel Brampton, Northampton, ir 1843, tho late Mr, Beasley was educat ed at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge. Ho served for a time in the Coldstream Guards, the 60th Rifles and the 39th Foot—retiring with th< rank of adjutant. Coming to New Zealand in 1866 he took up fanning neai Oxford, Canterbury, but aftcrwardf joined the Armed Constabulary, anc was transferred to tho Police Force after serving in the former body foi about three years. He then entered the Prisons Servico, and in 1889 hecame gaoler at Wanganui—a position ho retained until lus retirement in 1908. For some months hefore hit death he had been confined to his bed, The deceased has left a widow and sis sons—Mr. J. D. Noble-Beasley. (of the Magistrate's Court, Rotorua), whe went through the Boer war; Mr. H, Nohle-Beasley, of Mason, Struthers anc Co., Qhristchurcli; "Mr. C. Nohle-Beas-ley. journalist, Wellington; Mr. Roberl Noble-Beasley, now on the Englisl stage; Lieutenant T. H. Noble-Beasley E Company, 24th Reinforcements, for nierly of literarv staff of The Dominion; Mr. V. T. Nohle-Beasley, Griffith! and' Sons, Blenheim; and two daugh tors, Mrs. Thos. Vincent, New Plymouth, and Mrs. Thos. Oarlylo, Wa nganiii. Commander F. B. Noble, wk was aboard the Warrior in the Jutlant Battlo, Commander P. Noblo, of H.M.B Achilles, and Captain Norman.Noble of the Royal Engineers, are nephews ol the late Mr. Beasley.
Mr. H. B. Dousiin, Director of Public "Works in Ehodeßia, is visiting Zealand after an absenco of nearly twenty-five years. He is staying at the Midland Hotel, and will visit Rotorua before returning. Mrs. W. Pickering, Havelock, and Miss Douslin, Blenheim, aro his sisters, in the Marlborough district, where he_ will renew many acquaintances of his youth. Mr. Fred. R. Raynor has arrived from Auckland on business connected with the Farmers' Union Trading Company of the northern city.
