MASTERTON NOTES
Another welcome downpour.of rain was experienced in the Wairarapa on Sunday. . A considerable number of visitors iiavo , arrived in Masterton for the show, which opens to-day.. Accommodation at tho local boardinghousesis severely taxed. Tito cricket matches-were played on the park oval on Saturday with teams from, the Fcatherston Camp. Tho Masterton A team defeated a team from the Q.M. Stores, while Masterton B defeated the 24th Specialists by eighteen runs. ■ There are- at present thirty-four slaughtermen employed at .the Waingawa Freezing Works. About 2200 sheep, and lambs, and 85 cattle, aro now being slaughtered daily. The General Manager of Railways has informed .the Masterton Soldiers' Entertainment Committee that owing to the demand upon the Department's trained staff, it is impossible to run additional Sunday trains. The" Military Service Appeal Board sat in Masterton on Saturday, and dealt with about thirty-fivo appeals. The majority of tho appeals were dismissed. . Twenty-one entries have, been received for the two principal jumping events at the Masterton Show. A team from the Woodside Bowling Club visited Masterton on Saturday and endeavoured to wrest the Dixon Cup from the Masterton Club, but failed: In a shield bowling match, played on Saturday, Masterton defeated Martinborough by 62 points to 19. Greytown defeated the Park Club m a shield match by eleven points.
