.-..8y Telegraph!— Press .Association. Hastings, February 17. Between fifty and sixty members of the Hastings branch of the Liberal League attended.a,meeting last night for the purpose of electing delegates to attend the convention of delegates y from other parte of,the district on Monday night, when a candidate for the ../Eawke's Bay seat will;bb selected. •'-'-'. The delegate's -were appointed, and the meeting, by a.large majority, instructed them the candidature of Mr. H.lan Simson. The other names submitted were, those of Sir and Mr. Claphani. .. Sir John Findlay made the following statement to the. "Tribune" this ."" morning:—r "I found on arrival at Hastings that the 6trong representations made to me regarding the Liberal Party's'organisation, -unity; and: cohesion were unfor- • tunately entirely erroneous,, and that .four other Liberal candidates were in the field, two of, whom at least were determined to contest' the scat. I had been induced to consent to nomination -' by assurances numerous and infiuen- ; tial, and, confident that Hawke's Bay electorate, in view of the abnormal .conditions due to the war, desired this by-election to be run rather on national ■ than on local lines, and that my nonresidence in the district would not be ~;..regarded as a disqualification! This is not the case. I had no desire to thrust myself into the election, for I have ■ always been averse to Te-entering ! ■ 'politics, but my objections were over-. 'come by an appeal to patriotic motives. .-" -I regret to disappoint; many friends "■ Belonging to both parties who .have asked me to stand with the view to in some solution of the national problems that confront us, but .the conditions represented to me and . upon which I consented' are, I find, entirely absent in Hawke/s Bay. I have therefore withdrawn my nomination." .' \ '••■.." '■■ If Mr. Simson is nominated by the ..convention on Monday there will be .-' .other Liberal candidates contesting the election. Mr. A. L; D.; Fraser states his intention to oppose him, and Mr. A. : E.!.1u1l will.be asked by. a deputation ■ of Hastings citizens on Monday night to consent to nomination. , ,The 'intention of the local Reform Party has not yet been, made public. i ■ Sir John Findlay remains'here over . the week-end. : ,/ : ■; ■■' ELECTION ON MARCH 8. .:-''-.
