LAND FOR MAORI SOLDIERS
THE KING'S APPRECIATION. Iu September last some Maoris of consequence, desiring to do something to show their admiration of the splendid work' of their own young men on the battlefields of Europe, got together, and as the rosult some 30,000 acres of land! in tlio Taupo district was set aside as an area to be cut up among returned Maori soldiers. Tho gift was a "unique one. It showed that the Maori was not only ready to fight for the Empire, but those who could not go on the warpath were prepared to help those who did on their return. The news was sent Homo by tho Hon. W. H. Herries, through Lord Liverpool, to tho British Government, and a reply has been received by His Excellency from tho Hou. Mr. Bonar Law, which has been translated into Maori and 1 sent on to the chiefs concerned. The following is a re-translation of tlio letter forwarded to Te Heu Heu Tukino:— "December 5, 1916. "My Dear Lord, —I have the honour to advise you to inform your Ministers that I have placed your letter of October 5, 1916 (in which you inform lis that Te Heu Hou Tukino and lvingi Topia, oil behalf o-f the Ngati Tuwharetoa, has given certain lands for the boneiit of returned Maori soldiers) before His Majesty tho King, i»d am pleased to say that His Majesty greatly appreciates tho generous gift referred to."
