HUN OFFICER STOWAWAY
CAPTURE IN ENGLISH PORT. 'A Prussian officer, Lieutenant Johannes Bemhard Pier, who had been taken prisoner by the French and had escaped, was recently captured on hoard a foreign vessel at,a northeast coast port. He had been concealed in tho forepeaki and immediately on the arrival of the ship he peeped out to ascertain his whereabouts and was caught. Tall, thin, and about 25 years of age, ho was covero dwitli the grime of the forepeak. He said he had with him when h'e boarded the vessel two tins of condensed milk which he hoped would support'him until he reached a neutral country. He had been four da.vß at sea in bidiiiK, had lived on the contents of one tin, and had the other left. ■
Tho captain of the ship handed him ovfir to a military guard, and as he was taken away through the streets his Kiev uniform attracted attention. lie he.was a schoolmaster before ioin--1112 tho Army', was wounded at Warsaw, and then transferred to the Westpm front. He was taken prisoner by (he French on the Somme on September 14 and was pjace.d m a military prison. On making his escape he managed to reach llouen, where he boarded the foreiKii. vessel.
