1 CITY APPEALS | - 1 I THE POSITION OF THE POLICE j Further appeals were heard yesterday i by the Third Wellington Military Ser- 1 vice Board, wliich consists of Messrs. j W. H. S. Moorhouse (chairman), A. ij O'L. Considine, and M. J. Mack. j _ Appeals were lodged by the Commis- J sioner of Police in behalf of Constables ; Kenneth Parkinson, William James ] Nixon, James F. Murphy, and Michael Fahy, Sergeant Michaefl Gaffney, and 3 Detective-Sergeaift William Edward Lewis. ' j Commissioner O'Donovan said that I his ground of appeal was that ifc would S bo contrary to the public interest to send these men. He had appeared hefore the board on a previous occasion , and explained that there was a short- | age of police officers, and since then R the staff had been further depleted. 1 There had been ten, or about ten, resig- | nations, and no new men had yet been | taken on to assist in filling-the vacancies. Also, there were members of the " force who were approaching the retiring age. The board adjourned the case sine die, and exempted the appellants from military service meantime, provided they remain in their present employment. - An indefinite adjournment was made also in the case of A. S. Jordan, gaoler in charge of lloto Aira prison,- AVair marino. Some Exemptions Cranted. An adjournment for two months was granted in the case of Thomas J. Macintosh, an employee at the Gear Freezing Works, who stated ho spent' his time working as a shearer land at .tho meat trade. An appeal by Daniel Buckley" ship's steward, was allowed, on the ground that he was not a resident of New Zealand,_ but a resident of Australia. An adjournment sine die was granted in the case of David Quinn, a wireless operator. - At tho request of the Defence De-. > partment, the Prisons Department asked for the exemption of two prisoners who were serving a long sentence; on the ground that within the meaning of the Act these men were not . reservists. The application was granted. The appeal of' AVilliam 11. Powell, dental surgeon, was adjourned, pending the medical examination of. the appellant. j 1 ' Various Gases Dismissed. Clive Blackman, book-keeper and confidential clerk to T. W. Butcher, manufacturer, Lower Taranaki Street, appealed, and his employer asked for an extension of time so v that a woman might; ; be trained to take his place. The appeal was dismissed. An appeal by Walter Joseph Boxhall, blacksmith's striker, was dismissed. Appeals by the following were dis-* missed becatiso the appellants did not appear in support of them: —Erederick Walter Simms, seaman, s.s. Terawhit\; Patrick T.' Moore, wool-classer; Alexander W. Kennedy, enszine-fitter, Porirua Mental Hospital; Robert AVatson, blacksmith, Home Street ; Richard Williams, machinist., ,
