VANDALS AT THE SUMMIT
9 . SOLDIERS' HUT BROKEN INTO. Acts of vandalism committed at the Summit by unprincipled persons have caused the Waii'arapa Patriotic Society a good deal of worry and annoyance. Some months ago the society built a hut at the.Summit for use by the patriotic workers who go ahead of the Reinforcements on their periodic marches across the hill, and prepare a hot meal for the troops. This shed is built of galvanised iron, and has a ■window and ■ door, which are locked when the hut is not in use. Ou the last three or four occasions that the lint has boon used the members of the society found that the building had been interfered with. Several sheets of iron had- been removed from the back or the building, and the lock of the door broken. Strange to say, tho window was intact. Near the hut are two large boilers for making tea, and two large water tanks which are fed by a ram from a stream close at hand. It was found that the taps of the tanks and boilers were repeatedly stolen, and it has.been found sary to carry pipes into tho building, so that the taps would be secure. The people of Featherston"as"well as members of tho Wairarapa Patriotic Society are indignant at this damage, maliciously done, to a building which is used purely for the soldiers, and which was erected by patriotic citizens.
