ihe first meeting of the summer session took place on Wednesday night. Tho attendance was larger t'han anticipated considering there are many members away" and other not cognisant of the opening date. Captain Barclay presided over trie gathering, whom he addressed on the study of-French. He said that many failed to speak fluently because they had not sufficient confidence in themselves and were afraid of making errors; but it was only by making mistakes that it was learned how to avoid' them. He demonstrated the faoility and lucidity of expression in French by giving a variety of extracts from letters of celebrities. He commenced and finished by urging the study of the language of our noblest ally, as tire French and British were now as one family. The address, being greatlv appreciated, was followed by a "friendly discussion. ' Mr. Whetton gave a short reading: "Los Castors ont fall leur reapparition en Provence," dealing with the reappearance of beavers in qreat numbers around the delta of the Rhone since the commencement of the war, previous tn which a reward of 15 francs was given for every beaver tilled. 1 Members of the club will gladly receive as visitors, students and others of both sexes taking an interest in French and wishing to indulge in a little practice.
