FOR SOLDIERS' FAMILIES

HOUSING SCHEME FOR FEATHERSTON. Housing accommodation ill Featherston or near the camp is so limited awl tlio ronts so high that tho average soldier is unable to provide quarters for his family, who wish to be near him while ho is in camp. It is stated that there nro cases where small houses fetch as much as from £2 10s. to £i 10s., and thero are many offers at that. It js said that one unpretentious dwelling has housed as many as thirteen people, and five others who sought temporary shelter there had to bo refused, and had great difficulty in . finding accommodation in the district. Quito a few families liavo lived in tents from time to time. . To meet tho urgent need, the Salvation Army has a scheme under consideration which is likely to be put into operation very shortly. The scheme provides for tho erection of a building of about forty rooms and if definitely decided upon will aim at providing accommodation for the wives and mothers of soldiers who desire to spend a week or a fortnight, or even a. little longer, near the cairm while their men are in training. The buildiug, for which' a suitable and centrally-situated site has bpen secured, will bo run on the lines of the Salvation Army's well- ; known People's Palaces, and the charges, it is stated, will be suoli that a soldier will find it quite possible to live while at Featherston on his present income. No particular style lias yet. been selected for the building. and while the original plans will probably provide for forty rooms and a dininghall, it is thought that this will'be added to as occasion and monpy warrant. It is known, however, that the institution will be rnn as near cost as possible, and should therefore lie greatly Appreciated by the men and their families. •
