A SATISFACTORY POSITION. revenue and expenditure figures published in tliis week's Gazette show that for the expired' portion of tlio financial year up to- January 6, 1917, tlio Departnjeub has dono very .well indeed, showing an increased revenue and a decreased expenditure. The main figures for the current year, as compared with the corresponding licures for last year, arc as follow:— b 1917. 1916. Revenue £3,682,611 £3,366,685 Kxpenditurc £2,197,150 £2,229, <ois Percentage of expenditure • oo ' to rovenuo 61.33 G6...3 For tho four weeks ending January 6, tho period in which the Christmas' and New Year holidays fall, the returns show a slight decrease. For WIM-' the revenue was £433.697, and for the preceding year £136,053.
