NOTES AND COMMENTS.

....'.' IBx Glescob.l •' The Marlborough meeting, which opens to-day, looks liko being as successful as any previously held, by. the Eiverlands Club. The fields are larger than in for•!mer years, and the racing should bo interesting.. . '' ' '* , The first went is the Maiden Hack "Race, the field for which includes several ■Wellington candidates. Providing she has got over the cold.she was suffering :f}'om . some time back, Mr. A. 'Eire's '•candidate, Imaribbon, may carry ; most money on tlie machine.. Another well'backed one will bo .All War, the full 'brother to El Gallo. _ •" In tho Flying Handicap, the top"weight, Samisen, may be favourite. The Birkenhead niaro is not meeting a strong field, and though she has a big weight ler ability to begin smartly will stand "to her, as will -the circular nature of the •course. The Hack Welter Handicap will eco Princo Delaware carrying No. 1 saddle-' ■cloth. His form at .Trelitbahi was good,' vmd ho is built on weight-carrying lines, •but both Mystoriaroh and 'To Opai are smart over this distance, and should bo troublesome at the finish. The Cup has drawn a good field, and •probably Need and Tango will go so fast •over the first part that they will carry \ Daytime, who has 9st., ,o£E his feet. Gold Souilt,'' Bst., 131b., has. previously won on this course, and. a faSt-ruh Taco. to-day liiould suit tho big fellow. The draw for places at the barrier will be an important factor in tho Dash Hack Handicap, in whioh til tho competitors t carry the same weight. Were tho race a handicap, Waimatoa would be giving the others' a'lot of weight, and if he draws anything liko a good posi-tion-he may bo the public fancy. None of the hacks he has met this season, with the exception of Form Up, havebeen able to extend him, and it is very doubtful if the last-named would have beaten nun at ■ four furlongs at Treitli&m. - , Want ' and Itockbound, who figure amongst the acceptors for the Cup, will it is understood, "bo reserved foi* the Ugbrooke Welter Handicap, and both should run well. The. Poriruii horse would bo . better suited if .the sting was out of the ground.' 1 _ , ' Favouritism, in the Ward Hack Han- : dicap will depend on . the form shown earlier in th© day, as nvo6t of tho runners will have started earlier.' Sir George Clifford, who has been seriously ill for some time fast, has recovered sufficiently to be out and about. He was present at tho CJ.C. Midsummer ■ Meeting-on. Saturday, where his horses iron three races. Handicaps for the first day's events at the Wanganui Cup Meeting are due on . Friday.' At the conclusion of Saturday's racing at Riccarton Sir George Clifford.sold.tho. four-year-old horse Battle Eve to Mr. J. .F. Buchanan. He will probably be treated to a good spell, and may eventually be given a chance to earn distinction at Mr. Buchanan's Kinloch stud, where his- sire .has done, so .well in recent years. Battle Eve is by Martian—To-morrow, by Bill of Portland—Elusive, by Trenton —Bleusis, by Barcaldine. He won ; the Welcome Stakes as a- two-year-nld. and since then, though, far from being a reliable racehorse, Jib has .captured a , number of stakes, run over , various distances up to a mile. Cheshire, who sired two of the winners on the opening day of the Taranaki meeting, is practically an unknown sire . in tho Dominion. Ho was imported by the late Mr. G. G. Stead in 1907. Ho was sired by Tarporley, from Maybud. by Foxliall—Cori6ande, by King Tom—May Bloom, by Newminster—lady Hawthorn, by -Windhouud—Alicc Hawthorn. Tarporley was a son of St. Simon, and sired a number of winners in England. Simple Sain and Master Sylvia, who are engaged in the Hack Hurdles at New Plymouth to-day, - were not seen out at the Egmont meeting last week. The former goes very fast ovor- a short course, but he will probably be in need of a race. The presence of Hiishman. Interlude. Ping Lupin, niid Tvson in tho Stewards' Handicap at New Plymouth will ensuro a very fast pace. The form of Bushman, runner un to Tete-a-Tcte at Hawera, may bo tho means of making liim favourite to-day. Alteration, who scored such a runaway victory in the Welter Handicap at Wood•villo in December, apnears to bo very favourably handicapped in the Mimi Welter Handicap at the Taranaki meeting to-day. A. Press Association messago from Syd- ; ney last 'evening stated that the mare Forest Belle has been sold at auction for 60 guineas. - In Sharland's Fluid Magnesia you always get highost strength, purest quality 1 ana best value. Ono shilling per bottlo. —Advt. -
