CANTERBURY MEETING ADJUTANT WINS BIG HANDICAP BIPLANE SCORES IN THE PLATE. Christchurch, February 3. The Canterbury Jockey Club Midsummer Meeting was held to-day in favourable weather. Matty was the first to show out, followed by All Serene and Thames. These three showed the way round the turn,, where they had Kimbolton and Marabout in close attendance. At the distance there was not much to choose between the first three, but Matty went on and won by a good length, Thames beating All Serene by half a length, with. Marabout and Kimboltou next. Garetta drew out smartly, and showed the way down tho back to Briar Patch, Battln Eve, and Comely. Going round the bend Comely Beaded Battle Eve,, while at the entrance to tho straight Garetta dropped back. When fairly in line for home Battle Eve was just behind Briar Patch, whom he beat by a head. Trenthani Rose and Gamecock were prominent early, but before reaching the courso proper Biplane was out in front, with Wrestler at the head of the others, Kilrea being -next. Biplane easily held his place, and won easily by four lengths. Koesian taking second place a hundred yards from home and beating Wrestler by two lengths. Gamecock was fourth, followed by Kiliea and Kilkee, with Trentham Rose last. Time, lmin. 13sec. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, of 400 sovs. One mile and a half. 3 Sir George Clifford's b. h. Adjutant and Rose Pink were first to break the line, but Rose Pink soon took up the running, adn going past Cutts's6ne was three lengths clear of Adjutant and Slogan, who were a similar distance in front of the other pair. There was no change for five furlongs, when Snub made a forward move, joining Adjutant and Slogan a furlong further on. Going Tound the turn Slogan dropped back, and racing for the straight Adjutant went after Rose Pink, who was done with when heads were turned for home. From this point Adjutant was never troubled, and he won easily by four lengths from Snub, who stayed on long enough to beat Margerine by a neck. Time, 2min. 36 3-ssec. Bee got out with a lead of several lengths, but at the end of a furlong Kilboyne and Partisan ran past her. Partisan- -drew clear before reaching.the half-mile post, where Sartorze and Kaminohe fell. At the. entrance to the straight Comely moved up and she won bv three Iwgths from Bee, who was a similar distance in front of Partisan, with Kilboyue close up. Time, lmin. 29 l-^sec. After the race an inquiry was held into the cause of the accident.. C. Emerson, rider of Comely, was held to be responsible, and he was suspended for two months for crossing.
