HARD FIGHTING
BRITISH ATTACK IN MESOPOTAMIA TRENCHES WON AND LOST (Rec. February 4, 5.5 p.m.) j London, February 3. An official dispatch from the British Headquarters in Mesopotamia states: On the night of January 28-29 \Ve ad.vanced 300 yards on the right bank o£. the Tigris, eastwards of the Tigris-Hai junction, and. also\ advanced froni 200 to 300 yards westward of the TigrisHai junction on 800 yards of front. Our casualties were slight. Our cavalry on Wednesday secured large stocks and grain, and captured on Thursday the last line hut one of the trenches eastward of the Tigris-Hai junction. On the right bank of the latter river wo Tepulsed a counter-atack and attacked and captured trenches to the westward of the Tigris-Hai junotion, killing a large number of the enemy. "We.were subsequently compelled to relinquish portion of the ground gained. Our cavalry throughout the latter operations successfully operated westward of Kut-el-Amara.—Aus;-N.Z. Cable Assn.Eeuter.
