MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A sitting of tho Magistrate's Court yesterday was presided over by Mr. L. G. Itcid.S.M. . For insobriety, William Herbert Vincent and Peter M'Cabo were each fined 205., with tho alternative of three days in gaol. George Cooper Wilkinson appeared on remand charged with being found helplessly drunk in Courtenay Place. Defendant also had fivecharges against him of entering licensed premises during the currency of n pro■hibition order. His Worship ordered him to pay medical expenses amounting to 17s. Cd. in connection with the 'first charge, and on the others, merely ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon to do so. , For using obscene language in Taranaki Street, Hobert M'Cartney was fined 405., with tho alternative .of seven days' imprisonment. Joseph Griffiths, who, according to Inspector Hendrey, was killing himself by excessive drinking, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing an overcoat from a soldiers' hostel. He was remanded to Monday, to enable the police to decide- what had best be dono with him; It was stated that there was no desire to have tho defendant punished, in view of his condition of health. William James M'Cullough, tor whom Mr. P. W. Jackson • appeared, was remanded for a week oh a charge of stealing a postal packet containing valuable security. Joseph Thomas Christie, charged with stealing. a motor-cycle at Christchtirclij was remanded to February 7. In proceedings taken by tho Inspector of Awards (Mr. G. Lightfoot), G. Castles, chemist, was fined 10s. and costs for failing to keen a wages and time-book in the prescribed form, and W. Lee, fruiterer, was fined 20s. and costs, for selling cigarettes at an hour at which tobacconists' shops were compelled to be closed. BY-LAW CASES. ; For exceeding the speed limit for motor traffic, Bert Power was fined 40s. and costs. For being in charge of insufficiently lighted vehicles, J. Campbell and Hugh Gillen wore fined os. each, and Ernest Samuel French, and Gen. Frederick Skinner 10s. each. Failure to notify change of ownership of a motor-car led to Luther Stephenson being fined ss. and cos'ts. Alf. Lamb was lined os. and costs for failing to slop a motor-car when ordered bv a policeman to dn sn. Phillip Ernest Uoid, -who had loft two larye cases of plate-glass on the footpath in Holland Street, was ordered to pay costs 7s. William O'Connor was lined os. for driving a motor-car without having a certificate showing that he was qualified to do so. H. S. Davis, who had inadvertently omitted to pay his faro in a.tram, was convictrcl and ordered to pay costs, 13s.
