The Egmont Meeting will be continued to-day, when' the Hawera Stakes, . a weight-for-ago event, one mile, will bo decided. Owners should note that the acceptances for the ilarlborough, Ateeting close to-night. , The Summer Meeting of the Gisborne Racing Club will commence to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday. Weights for the Turanaki ileeting are due to-day. Acceptances for the C.J.C. Midsummer Meeting close to-aight. With a view to making room for yearlings, Flying Start, Battle Eve, San Sebastian, Good Hope, Petruchio, Don Pacifico are to bo sold out of tbo Chokebore stable. ' Achi Baba, the Finland colt in the Highden stable, wae sent to Foxton to contest tho Trial Stakes, in which it was thought he had fair prospects of success, but at the barrier rise he stuck his toes in and took no part in tho race. As . was generally anticipated, Egypt proved equal to winning tho Egmout Cup. He had a very weak field to defeat, and tho dividend paid was probably the smallest in tho history of tho race. At the last two summer meetings of the Egmont Kvicing Club, E. J. Mason was present and then hurried back for the C.J.C. Midsummer Meeting, return T ing north the samo night for the Tai'anaki fixture. This year ho altered his plans, and his son Percy took charge.of Bimeter and Greenstreet while his father returned to Eiccartoil, and will remain there until the eve of the Wanganui Meeting. The , Waikanae mares, Mnllaig end Culture, which were eold eome time back to a ' Queensland etudmaster, have both produced filly; foale to. Bezonian. The mares are now located at the Lyndhurst Stud. At Caulfield on January 20, Pinon, who won the Rowenn Steeplchase, was ridden by the ex-Trentham horseman, 11. Thompson. The Ti'Piitham trainer, H. Telford, lias bn,ol;ed accommodation at Blenheim for Probation and Mursiuuh. C. Prilchnrd will also send a team to Blenheim consisting of Humorist, Rumania, and Royal Sleeves,

■ It is generally expCcM that if the weights pormit tho Cup winner, Bunting, will bo a eta*! , , m * ho Wanganui Cup. A prominent a^ 1 *™ from tho lists at Wanganui is Kinau> This liorso has "been giving his traiuer somo trouble of. late, nnd it has been decided not to rnco him until tho tracks get softer, llis owner, Mr. AV. Duncan, has still a very useful horso to carry his colours in tho Cup in the shape of the Elevation gelding, Client. Thero was a good number of New Zealand jockeys present at the iunerai of the lato Joseph O'Connell, who wa3 buried in the Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne, on January 19. . Amongst the number were S. Cairns, S. Neary, H. Thompson, and T. Cahill. Tho lastnamed was chief mourner, and represented the Now Zealand relatives..

Labour troubles are becoming more acute in stables each week. The Joi'dell trainer, F. Tilley, has three of his Australian importations running in the paddock, and ho cannot race them for tho reason stated above.

J. CShea, who ha 9 not done nearly so well this season, in tho matter of riding winners, as he did Inst year, was successful on four occasions at Takapuna, while he also rode the winning double at_ Egmont yesterday. He is still In a of a dozen compared with. C. Emerson, who" heads the winning list. J. .Tamieson, with Splendidus, Otter,, and Te Opai,. will leave here on Mon"day next for the Blenheim Meeting.

The three-year-ol(i seMing , Keinraa, who was leased by a Wairarapa sportsman from Mr. J. B. Reid, was recentlyraffled for tho Navy League Fund, and realised .£3B 10s. Hβ hae now had: a change of stables, and will in future be trained at Opaki. Under the 'heading of "Old Memories," tho special commissioner of the "Sportsman" (London), in its iesue of November 22 last, makes the following reference to Musket on the occasion of that horse's victory in the Midland Counties' Stakes, two miles, at Warwick, on November 17, 1871:—"Musket (T. Chaloner), 4 years, carried Bst. 121b., and won by half • a length from Black Gown, 3 years, sst. 101b., with Westley, i years, 7st. 91b., third, beaten a neck; Rose of Athol, 3 years, 7st. Sib., 'a good fourth'—as expressly stated in the 'Calendar'—twelve ran. I remember that I thought she was second. That was the day when I was specially impressed by tile tremendous power of Jlusket's loins and quarters, as I looked down on him from end of the gtand, while he etood outsrae tho weighing room after the race. Little did I dream then, however, of his future fame as a 6ire. Rose of Athol was out of a Voltigeur mare, and so two years later was that good Blair Athol horse, Andred. This inspired me with a belief that Voltigeur mares were the best for mating with Blair Athol, and I even bought one, Lady Ravensworth. However, in her record she 'missed to Blair Athol' in 1879. That was a bod year for me altogether, as the old Stud Company (Cobhain) was wound up that September, and Blair Athol passed into other hands. Lady Ravensworth was covered by the Blair Athol horse, Craig Millar, in 1881, and sold to the late Mr. Q. (i. Stead, who took her out to New Zealand, tojsther with Stepne, Florenco Macartby, Nelly Moore, and other notables, the last-named carrying Lochiel, Lady Ravensworth proved to be in foal all right, and i-lie uroduced in New Zealand (to English Time) a chestnut colt, w.hich was named Ravenscraig. He won a race, but was of no great account."
