AMERICAN SHIPPING. Mniller and Quereau, in their latest.New York report, say of shipping matters-.-"Conditions remain aboui as last reported, with firm freight rates quoted by all the lines. Charter cost of steamers has recently advanced quite sharply, α-nd they are difficult to obtain, as there appears; to be a much larger demand for the' Atlantic trade, and steamers are now' being taken undep a year's charter at ; present prevailing rates, which wouli seem to indicate continuance of high cost. There is ample "tonnage at present' for Australia and New Zealand, but this is owing in port to tho falling-oi , 'fn ■ laments. We can seo no prospect of a lower freight market while there ie a possibility that rates may be advanced during the coming winter. The Kapuni goes on the slip at 10 a.m. to-day and comes off to-night. Sue 6ailo to-morrow for Pa-tea. The barqucntine Laura, which wae recently sold to Messrs.
