'A meeting of tho Council "was held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. J; W. M'Ewan) presiding. Thore -were also present: Councillors Brocklebank, ' M'Douaall, M'Kenzio, Trueman, Forsyth, Anderson, Gaynor. The roport of tho Works Committee was read. Tho committee suggested that the council should reply to King Bros., who applied for an increase of cnrta'go rates, stating that it was unablo to agree to tho increase at tho present time, but that the matter .would bo considered at the end of the financial year, and tho suggestion was. adopted. . Councillor M'Dougall moved, and it was seconded by Councillor M'Kenzic, that all employees should receivo a fortnight's holiday each year, this resolution to take effect as from April 1 next. Tho motion was adopted. A deputation from tho sewago workers waited on tho council to protest against the treatment such workers received at Christmas timo with respect to special work on the woollen mill . dam. Thore was a great deal of heated | talk on the part of the two men who j composed the deputation, and finally the matter was referred to the Works Committee for investigation. It was resolved to write to tho Auckland City Council for particulars of tho means provided by that bocty for tho amusement of the children visiting tho Auckland parks. Councillor M'Kcnzie, who moved in tho matter, gave a great, deal of credit to the excellent'work done in this respect by tho Auckland City authorities.
