BOEOTJGH COUNCIL MEETING.

Mr. H. Baldwin (Mayor) presided over last evening's mooting of tho Lower Hutt Borough Coun.cil. The health officor recommended, in a circular letter, that the use of common drinking cups at public fountains Mid other places bo discontinued. Tho letter was received. Tho secretary of tho fire brigade requested the council to erect a- practice tower for tho brigade's use on the Eccreatiou Ground. The matter was referred to tho enginoer for his report. John G. Wilkin's request that a gas lamp be placed in Pharazyn Street, adjacent to Mr. Shearer's house, was referred to a committee. W. M. Extons application, for a gas lamp, vn Mudio Street was similarly dealt with. A dispute in reference to the paymont of a license fee for a motor delivery van was referred to tho borough solicitor. The owner of tho van contended that tho by-law was unjust, and suggested that legal proceedings be taken m a friendly to test tho councils right to a foe. . Tho engineer reported on tno cost oi various works recently completed in the borough. " A retaining wall had been built at Everest's Creek at a total cost of £3 fls. sd. Arrangements had been mado for a trial order of sis "Acme" gas-cookers from 'Birmingham, at a cost of £15 12s. 2d., froight extra. No gas, water, or sewage had boon mado during the past fortnight. £189 lis. lOd. had boon expended from tho district fund account, and £20 is. 3d. from the gas account during that ponod. The report was adopted. The Mayor submitted the report of No. 1 Committee regarding tho proposed loan of .£4OOO for water supply purposes. Tho committee had decided to reduce tho amount by £500, and recommended that tho Minister of Internal Affairs be asked tor authority for the raising of £3500. The council appointed the Mayor, tho engineer and tho Town Clerk to wait upon the Minister, and make the necessary representations to him. It was resolve to extend the gas main in Knight's load, provided four residents guaranteed to become gas consumers. • ■ Henry Savage s tender for tho supply of dog collars was accepted. Councillor Ball moved-.-"That the council records its disgust at tho apathy of the authorities in dealing with tho ragwort .pest, and calls upon the Government to enact such measures as will cause the removal, and destruction by fire, of the above-mentioned weed" Councillor Hobbs stated in the course of the discussion that tho ■weed had spread locally from land that tho Government had purchased about 17 years ago. The motion was earned unanimously.
