NOTES AND COMMENTS
■ IBr Glenooe.!
The Gisborne Cup meeting will take place on Thursday and Saturday of this week. The big handicap has drawn a good field, and it sbould bo the best race ever seen on- the Gisborne course. The locally-owned Seadown was a bit sore after his three races at Trentham, so has decided to give him an easy time of it for tfye next lew weeks. Though -Egypt has yet to win over a twelve furlongs course his showing in- the ■C.J.C. Derby, when he acted as runnerup to The Toff, may be sufficient to send him out favourite in tho Egmont Cup, to .bo run to-morrow. It is expected that the totalisator, which was. recently legalised in New South Wales, will not be used at Randwick until the spring meeting. It appears, from correspondence received from Sydney, that tho Australian Jockey Club is at its wits' end „to know where to pat tho lnaohines, as the club is greatly hampered for room.
Daytime, who is top weight in the Marlborough Cup, is engaged at tho C.J.C. meeting on Saturday, and/as he has been sent south it looks as if he is to race at Riccarton. If this is so it will take his trainer all his time to get him to the Marlborough fixture.
It was intended to send Gold Soult across to Trentham for. tho Summer Handicap, run on the concluding day at Trentham, but when doing a gallop on tho beach he took charge of his rider iind bolted a couple of circuits before he could be restrained. He was very sore after it, so his trip was cancelled.
Tho Martagon horse Quinn's Post, who is owned by the ex-New Zealander, P. Keith, was only beaien by a head in the valuable Challenge Stakes, run at Randwick on January 20. Quinn's Post was recently under offer to-a Gisborne stud master, but no deal resulted.
Sea Pink won another race for Mr. E. J. Watt at Caulfield this month. This was the Anniversary Handicap, in which he scored decisively from Pretty Bobby. Sea Pink is lengaged in the Hobart Cup, to be run to-morrow. ' He is top weight in a weak field.
At the Caulfield meeting on January 17 the two-year-old Sweet Comedy, by Comedy King, from tho New Zealandbred' Aleger, crossed her legs, and fell in the Holiday Stakes, and, breaking a leg, had to be destroyed. Her dam Aleger recently died at the Shipley Stud. Discussing the merits of past and present jockeys, an English critic" Bays it has been pointed out that neither Maher nor Wootton ever attained the degree of success—as judged simply by the number of races won each seasonaccomplished by Archer, Moray Cannon, Tommy Loa'tes,.and other jockeys before their day, but tho conditions—flag versus gate starting—woro bo totally different that no reasonable comparison can be instituted. Thus apprentices enjoy a far greater advantage under tho modern' method of starting than in the days of Archer, Ifordham, and other groat horsemen, and cannot be 60 easily "jockeyed" out of a fair commencement. The rules i rolating to -unfair riding during the course of a race are also more helpful to the lesser lights, so that .matters are far more evenVy balanced than they used to be even a quarter, of a centur/ ago. In tho days of flag 6tarte tho experienced jockey did not give ■■ a comparatively ?reen youngster much consideration, but he barrier has brought them all much nearer level, though even now some riders badly beat others, at tho start owing to being much more wide awake. King - George has entered three' colts for the 1918 Two Thousand Guineas, so it is evident he has no intention of dropping out of Taring. John Eeoves, after training in Austria for 50 years with marked success, retired from business last year. As far back as 1862 Beeves rode winners in England. His latest patron in Austria was Baron A. de Eothschild, and Eeeves's son is to. succeed him-in the.lattcr's service.
