STATE MEAT SHOPS

FIRST DAY IN AUCKLAND

RECORD BUSINESS

The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. D: S. Mac Donald) has- received from the Secretary to the Board of Trade at Auckland a report on the first day's business at the two butchers' shops which are now being run by tho Government in order to control tho retail meat prices.

Tho report states: The first day's business at tho State meat shops constitute a record, despite adverse conditions, it being an exceedingly hot day. Business at the saleyards on Wednesday had evidently been affected through the scheme. Beef prices were normal: mutton prices were from 2s. to 3s. less than last week's rates. Everything is going along satisfactorily, and strong evidence has been evinced generally that the scheme should bo extended."
