THE WEATHER
« FORECAST AND SUMMARY AT 4 P.M. YESTERDAY. Present indications are for strong northwest to south-west winds, and unsettled' and cloudy weather, with rain in many, parts. The barometer is unsteady; hut is due to rise everywhere soon. Cloudiness has increased generally since last evening, and a lew scattered' places lave reported rein to-day. Freshening northerly winds have predominated, the barometer continuing low in tho south. 1 • D- O. BATES. Meteorological Office, Wellington, January 24. 1917. DISTRICT REPORT. (From Our Spcciar Correspondent Featherston, January 24.—Slightly overcast; calm and warm. Miss A. Pollock Smith, Carew School, .Ashburton, has received from the Base Records Office, Melbourne, n letter enclosing an extract from .tho London "Gazette" of September 1, stating that the King has awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field to her brother, No. 4026 Private Thomas P. Smith, of tho 23rd battalion of the Australian Forces. Private Smith is the youngest Von of tho TaiaMr. Robert Pollock Smith, of Duvniichelles, and was a former pupil of the Waimate District High School. At the outbreak of tho war he joined the Royal Marines, and ho was with the force that was engaged in tho Antwerp expedition. On his return to England ho was sent to Callipoli and was on one of three barges that were sunk at the famous landing, but managed to scramble ashore. Tho following day lie received a serious shell wound in tho leg, and was sent into hospital in Egypt. On his recovery ho transferred to the 'Australians and landed in Franoo in March, 1916. Uo won tho Military Medal in July, and in tho following' August recoived shell wounds in the shoulder, the groin, and the leg. Tho last letter from Private Smith was written from Woodstock Convalescent Hospital. England, when ho stated that ho was 3oing well, and hoped to be back in jth£j Iregchcs fcpfor r q .QlpiisJsjjwß,
