TRENTHAM RACES

SECOND DAY T HYMENSTRA WINS THE 1 STAKES 2 BIG HANDICAP WON BY ADJUTANT ' A very big crowd rolled up for the ® second day's racing at Trentham, and i they were rewarded with some fine c contests. The khaki element was very- pronounced, and loud cheers greeted tho 5 sucoess of Adjutant, who ivas a popu- B lar khaki tip, though neglected hy tho t general public. The machine record f was smashed, and at the end of the day 1 the total was £58,468 10s., as against 1 £48,717 10s. for the corresponding day ' last year. Backers held their own f fairly well, four favourites being sue- ■ cessful. - For the opening event Thames was withdrawn, and the public went heavily for Mysteriarch, Tango, and Plymouth. The last-named ran badly, and was in trouble the whole way. . l'riuco Delaware and Tango were early in the lead, ■ and followed by Comment and Master Boris they led down tho back. At tho half-mile Master Boris fell back, and Sunny Climes and Mysteriarch took second place. The leaders entered tho straight together, but the light-weight ! held Ins own and won easily from 1 Tango, who was a. length in front of tho fast-finishing Sunny Climes. Mysteriarch and Comment were the next to finish. Another strong order in Comely was narrowly defeated by Goldstream and Hyllus in the January "Welter. The Auckland Guineas winner set out to win from end to end, but in the last stride Goldstream caught and beat liim by half, a, head, with tho favourite a neek away, and Rockbound close up. San Sebastian, who stripped well, was made a good second favourite, but he was in one of his sour moods, and finished last. As a racehorse he looks a hopeless case, and 'his owner will probably decide to send him out of the Chokebore Stable. Scratchings wero very numerous in tho Wellington Stakes. In the birdcage Sweet Tipperary and Sarah Grand were on their toes, and (it the barrier they gave the starter a nice picnic. On tho machine Hyinenstra, who saddled up well, was the best backed, there being over 3000 tickets taken on him. He began very smartly, and soon had the field in trouble. Entering tho straight Koesian and Estland _ wero nearest to him, but at the finish ho cantered home three lengths ahead of JSoesian, who carried his big weight well, and held off the good-looking Estland. Kilrea was fourth. Backers suffered a heavy reverse In the Racing Club Handicap, when two hot favourites in Rangitero and John Barleycorn wero beaten by Adjutant, : who 'had raced badly on Saturday. John Barleycorn saddled up very well, ■ and so did Adjutant and Indigo, but Rangitero had lightened up a lot behind. Deeley rode him in behind and rushed to the front at the quarter-milo i post, but though he caught Adjutant the latter went away again. John Bar- . leycorn ran a good race, and was In it till the last pinch. Scdd-el-Bahr ' mado most of the pace, but the held 1 had him two furlongs from home j. "Wishful was ridden in behind, but . failed to show up. , The public sized up the twc-ycaMicl 1 handicap well by making Chortles sister Chuckle a hot favounto. She was ' i„ behind Birkenvale till the distance, when she forged ahead; and won easily, i Hewitt got Birkenvale to do his best, ' and in a close finish for second lio held off the moderate Lovesick. Mount Joy, \ who were well fancied, ran badly, and n Exclusive, who was making her first ,f appearancc, failed to run xtp to track s f °Mascot had made such a good show- : ing in tho "Wellington Cup for a mile . that tho support she got in the Douro r_ Cup was quite justified. Tho first four A< horses in the handicap -were all carrying over four figures. At the jump away Mascot soon got in front, and, attended by Probation, she led tho whole way. Over tho last furlong-the ® duo had a great set to, hut tho threei year-old maintained her lead and won » by a head. Sleiglit-of-Hand was two ls ' lengths away, and then came Miss :o Do Val and Thames. The Tace was run ' n at an even pace throughout, tho first lialf-milo being done just under 50sec. 10 Captain Glossop was alongside Erobation into tho straight, where he faded 1( 1 out of it. Gladful showed up at this 10 point, but could not finish on. 11- xt was a high-class, field or hacks 3r that contested- the Camp Handicap. >g F orm "Up and Shiela divided favouritfc. ism, and when the field came into line the pair were showing clear of the ih others, with Tantalus hanging badly. Form Tip forged ahead in the run home, l " and 'won comfortably. Ayah and Galore ot both finished on well, and the light)g weight got sccond placo by a Head. "Purlins was prominent at tho distance, 511 but failed to see it out. _ Merrie Poto, us Shiela, and Furling finished, in that order, just behind tho placed; horses, Ormosby was a poor last. Shrill got 0 it. hump just after tho start, and the , is incident was inquired into by tlic iU Judicial Committee. Hy In the concluding event the bracket he c( f p a j r (Menelaus and Chakwana). !S - Multiplication, and Sweet Com were ns backed in that order. It was a greal '(i race, and of tho trio Sweet Corn die b® best, but she .had to strike her colour; eli Nystad, who Tan a good race for G Clarke. Samisen and Lady Black wen prominent on to tho course proper ■where Sweet Corn took bu ith Nystad finished very strongly and beai all the top-weight. Menelaus was closi 1." up third, and then in a cluster canv res Lady Blackj Multiplication 3 and Cli&k
